I have a habit of cutting out news stories from the newspaper and throwing them into a box unsorted. I was going through one such box yesterday and came across a news story with the following headline—“Jobless rate lowest in 5 years.” The date of the article was November 4, 2006 and the article was on page A8 of the Peoria Journal Star. The jobless rate at that time according to the story was 4.4%.

The next week, November 7, 2006 was election day for Congressional members. The voting public was so dissatisfied with the majority control of Congress by the Republicans that they threw the rascals out electing Democratic majorities for both the House and the Senate.

Article I, Section 1, ¶ 1 of the United States Constitution declares: “All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.”

Article I, Section 7, ¶ 1 of the United States Constitution states: “All Bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other bills.”

Article I, Section 8, ¶ 1 of the United States Constitution proclaims: “The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts, and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;”

Article I, Section 8, ¶ 18 of the United States Constitution provides: “To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof.”

After the election of 2006 with the Democrats in control of both the House and the Senate, the unemployment rate began to increase. Consequently, two years later in the election of 2008, the voting public satisfied with the majority control of Congress by the Democrats threw more of the minority rascal Republicans out electing even greater Democratic majorities for both the House and the Senate. The voting public also elected a Democratic President giving the Democrats control of both Congress and the Presidency.

The headline in the Peoria Journal Star on February 27, 2009, page A8 declares “U.S. jobless claims top 5 million.” The sub-headline proclaims “Number hits highest level since record-keeping began four decades ago.” The voting public voted a majority of Democrats into Congress in 2006 and increased that majority in both Houses in 2008.

According to an article in the Peoria Journal Star February 27, 2009, page A2 the following is fact:

“Behind the billions”

“There has been a dizzying eruption of big numbers from Washington lately. Here are some of them.

$3.55 trillion: That’s the total of the spending blueprint President Barack Obama sent to Congress on Thursday for budget year 2010.

$1.75 trillion: That’s a negative number, the deficit by which the White House predicted spending for 2009 will exceed revenues. (That is almost ½ of the total 2010 budget—my addition)

$410 billion: That’s the size of the spending legislation passed by the House on Wednesday, largely along party lines, to cover government operations for the remainder of the 2009 budget year.

$787 billion: That’s the total price tag on a two-year stimulus bill Obama signed last week. (The first of more to come?—my addition)

$275 billion: That’s the maximum (for now?—my addition) of what Obama pledged last week to combat home foreclosures.

$700 billion: That’s the size of the financial bailout legislation passed by Congress last October.

$17.4 billion: That’s how much automakers General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC received in January.

$10.84 trillion: That was the size of the national debt—the cumulative total of the federal government’s annual budget deficits—as of Thursday.

$35,436: That’s every person’s individual share of the national debt when the debt is divided by the U.S. population.”

And another figure from the same paper, the same date, page A8.

$30.9 billion: That’s General Motors Corp’s loss last year.

The voting public got what they voted for. GO FIGURE!

As President Lincoln has been given credit for saying “You can fool some of the people all the time and all the people some of the time; but you can’t fool all the people all the time.”

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” Galatians 6: 7-8 (NIV)

The following article was published in the Peoria Journal Star on February 26, 2009, page B3. The headline is “Medicaid payments on fast track” with a sub-headline of “State plans to use $471 million windfall to reimburse providers.”

The article:

“Springfield—State government plans to use a potential $471 million windfall from the federal government to reduce the amount of time it takes for health-care providers to get paid for serving the poor, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.

State officials are ‘working closely’ with their federal counterparts to make sure that Illinois meets the requirements for the extra Medicaid money and can start drawing it, said Annie Thompson, spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, which handles the state’s Medicaid program.

A White House news release this week said Illinois would be eligible to get almost $471 million of Medicaid money as part of the new economic stimulus package. But Illinois, like all states, must meet certain standards spelled out in the law to receive the money, the White House said.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Illinois started receiving the funds on Wednesday, which is when the White House said they would be available to states.

Thompson said that to get the federal Medicaid money, Illinois immediately must pay physicians and other practitioners within 30 days. By June 1, the state also must pay hospitals and nursing homes within 30 days.

Right now, the state has ‘no problem’ meeting the 30-day threshold for practitioners, she said, but the wait is longer for hospitals and nursing homes. She said HFS is budgeted to have an average payment cycle of 90 days.

But providers of Medicaid services in Illinois, particularly hospitals, pharmacies and nursing homes, often wait for months to get paid by the state. At present, the state has about $2 billion worth of unpaid Medicaid bills.

Illinois hospitals also have been waiting for months to collect about $1 billion per year through a complicated maneuver that lets hospitals and state government collect hundreds of millions of dollars in extra money from the federal government for health-care needs.

On Wednesday, state lawmakers advanced legislation intended to kick-start the so-called ‘hospital assessment plan.’

A Senate committee voted for a bill that would authorize borrowing $510 million from selected state funds to provide the money needed to get the program rolling. The money would be repaid to the state funds by April 14.”

The article refers to the proposed $471 million in spending for Medicaid as a “windfall.” And, indeed, it is. What it is NOT, is money that will increase the number of jobs within the economy nor will it save jobs. The $471 million windfall is a debt that is already owed by the State of Illinois. As said before, this is just another example of a transfer of debt ownership from the State of Illinois, in this case, to the federal government.

I’m sure the doctors will be glad to receive the money owed them. I’m sure the hospitals, pharmacies, and nursing homes will be glad to receive the money owed them sooner instead of later. But, in no way, does this money increase or save jobs. That can only happen if the State of Illinois uses the money that would have been paid to the various groups for new spending. Since, by all reports, the Illinois State budget is some $9 billion in the red and growing, I for one, would be upset if that occurs and I, for one, seriously doubt if it will.

Again, it seems rather evident that much of this so-called “stimulus” money is no more than a transfer of debt from the State and local governments to the federal government. That might be a nice gesture on the part of the federal government, although I doubt it, but it DOES NOT and CAN NOT create jobs or save jobs unless the State and local governments spend more money rather than lowering their debt. I’m rather certain that most governments will choose to lower their debt. Again, a TRANSFER of DEBT; NOT job creation!

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” Galatians 6: 7-8 (NIV)

I received the following e-mail this past weekend. I am posting it tonight without comment. Each reader can do as he likes with the information.

“Don’t let Hussein Obama tell you it’s O.K. to shut down Guantanamo and bring a boatload of hardened terrorists onto American soil—not knowing where he’s going to cage them or how he’ll get rid of them!

Five days after he signed an executive order to close the prison, two Saudis released from Guantanamo in 2007, appeared in an al-Qaeda propaganda video, swearing to attack us again and pledging their loyalty to Osama bin Laden.

They proclaimed: ‘We assure our leaders Sheikh Osama Bin Laden, may God protect him, and Dr. Ayman al Zawahiri, that we shall continue to follow the path of jihad.’
Bringing 245 mad-dog terrorists into this country isn’t just stupid, it’s EVIL.

More than that, it’s a betrayal of the thousands who dies on 9-11. It’s a betrayal of our troops, living and dead. It’s a betrayal of our culture, our future, our faith.

Of course, if you disagree with B. Hussein Obama about Guantanamo, he’ll look down his nose at you and with a smirk say, ‘I won!’—as if the 58+ million people who voted against him were immediately deprived of their right to dissent. We’ve got to stop him NOW!

In bringing them to America, B. Hussein Obama may also give these fanatics protections afforded to American citizens, slick ACLU attorneys and the opportunity to make a mockery of our legal system!

House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lamar Smith said:

‘Closing Guantanamo Bay presents a clear and present danger to all Americans. These suspected terrorists must now be relocated and if they are transferred to military prisons in the U.S., they automatically will be granted rights far beyond those given to enemy combatants by any other country.’

‘The result is that many will petition friendly federal judges who may order their release into U.S. communities.’

Recently, led by Smith, House Republicans introduced legislation to prohibit federal courts from ordering the release or transfer of Gitmo detainees into the U.S. The Enemy Combatant Detention Review Act (H.R. 630) establishes clear rules regarding the detention of known terrorists.

And Senator James Inhofe also introduced the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility Safe Closure Act of 2009 ( S. 370), that will PROHIBIT the United States from using ANY funds to transfer detainees from Gitmo onto United States Soil and PROHIBIT the United States from using ANY funds to construct a facility on United States Soil to house these detainees!
It’s time to call B. Hussein Obama’s diabolical hand!

These measures MUST pass!

Use the button below to send your personalized faxes to B. Hussein Obama and EACH AND EVERY MEMBER of the Republican Leadership of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives.

Tell them it’s O.K. to have a backbone, O.K. to stand up for what’s right, O.K. to tell B. Hussein Obama he can expect tough, no-hold-barred opposition every time he does something stupid, or arrogant, or evil. Tell them to support H.R. 630 and S. 370 and to muster the votes necessary to overturn the Obaminable executive order to close GITMO that weakens or betrays America.

If the button does not work, copy and paste http://fs7.formsite.com/C4Strategies/form102708976/index.html into your Internet browser address bar.

Senator Inhofe is outraged by Obama’s pandering to the lies our enemies abroad have been spreading about Gitmo—that we’ve routinely tortured and killed prisoners.

‘I’ve been down there probably more than anyone else has, and I have yet to be down there where the prisoners weren’t treated better, in terms of living conditions, than our own troops.’

‘I think we need it, and I wish that Obama, when talking about closing Guantanamo, would say: ‘All right, where are we going to put those people?’’

But that is a question B. Hussein Obama will NEVER ask (at least he won’t ask it until the American people force his hand) and that is why Republicans in Congress MUST move ahead forcefully!

It should be increasingly obvious that when it comes to Gitmo, B. Hussein Obama has no idea what he is doing... that he is ‘winging it.’

That makes B. Hussein Obama the most dangerous of all men—a well-intentioned, power-hungry fool.

But B. Hussein Obama is—after all—‘the Savior of the World’... ‘the Chosen One.’ He can do no wrong. And for the moment, 68% of the people seem to agree with him.

Taking advantage of this popularity, he’s quickly consolidating his power, capturing the economy... nationalizing the banks and the auto industry... gobbling up health care.

If we give him the few months it will take for the American people to wise up and for his popularity to sink into the proverbial toilet, it will be too late.

We’ll be living in the United States of Obama.

Guantanamo is the first great battle. We can’t let him destroy America without manning the ramparts.

Be careful what you ask for. You may just get it!

Remember just a few months ago when the likes of the ACLU, The New York Times, the British press, and the entire Third World were shrieking at the top of their lungs, demanding that President Bush shut down Guantanamo, which they compared to Auschwitz and the Gulags. No equivocation. No compromises.

Now that Obama, strutting before the entire world, has done it, some of the nay-sayers realize that George Bush was right, when he said:

‘I’d like to close Guantanamo, but I also recognize that we’re holding some people that are darned dangerous, and that we’d better have a plan to deal with them in our courts.’

No such hesitation by Obama. Almost before he’d combed the confetti out of his hair, he had not only decreed the closing of Guantanamo, but also halted the prosecution of all terrorists, including five charged with coordinating the 9/11 attacks.

Suddenly, even the liberal New York Times saw the complications... the cold danger... possibly for the first time.

‘Among other cases, the decision will temporarily stop the prosecution of five detainees charged as the coordinators of the Sept. 11 attacks, including the case against the self-described mastermind, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed.’

‘Khalid Shaikh Mohammed is the self-described mastermind of the Sept. 11th attacks, a man who called himself a ‘jackal’ and who explained away the 3,000 victims of that day by saying ‘the language of war is victims.’

Left-leaning Reuters, also blinked at the reality.

‘There are a host of legal and practical problems, particularly concerning those who are deemed too dangerous to free. More than a third of the prisoners left in the camp are from Yemen and the US state department has still not been able to reach a deal with Yemen on security assurances or guarantees that prisoners will be treated humanely.’

The New York Times again:

‘But the orders leave unresolved complex questions surrounding the closing of the Guantánamo prison, including whether, where and how many of the detainees are to be prosecuted.’
Big question: Where would they put these hardened terrorists?

Next door to the Kennedy compound on Cape Cod?

When Joe ‘Loose Lips’ Biden tried to explain to the press why this wasn’t a problem—he made matters worse.

‘If they are not a U.S. citizen or if they are not here legally, then, even if they were released by a federal judge, they would not be able to stay here in the United States. They would be sent back to their country of origin. They would not stay here.’

Duh. The Bush folks already tried that, Joe. Their countries of origin WON’T TAKE THEM, BECAUSE THEY’RE MURDEROUS SCUM! Don’t you catch on? We get to keep them.

Nancy Pelosi didn’t catch on either, maybe because she thinks the whole world is like San Francisco:

‘The President’s deliberate and responsible approach will make the American people safer by improving the quality of intelligence, and begin to restore the standing of the United States in the eyes of the world.’

Then Congressman Bill Young came up with a great idea: Stash them in Alcatraz, SMACK DAB IN NANCY PELOSI’S BACKYARD!

After all, she was the #1 cheerleader for Obama, jumping up and down on Capitol Hill, shaking her pom-poms, shouting: ‘Give me an ‘O’! Give me a ‘B’!

But when asked if she thought it would be alright to corral a bunch of terrorists on Alcatraz, she said, and I quote, ‘It is—NO!’

Then she said of Young:

‘Perhaps he’s not visited Alcatraz. Alcatraz is a tourist attraction. It’s a prison that is now sort of like a—it’s a national park.’

Yeah, like Disney World, Nancy. Pelosi wasn’t the only Democrat, to turn white and break into a cold sweat when offered the terrorists.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas said:

‘We’ve got to discontinue the use of Guantanamo Bay. ... I think it gives the world a real question about how America values our democratic principles. It seems to violate everything our Founding Fathers said in the first place.’

But when she found out those same oppressed folks might be shipped to Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, she exploded like a string of firecrackers, the Founding Fathers notwithstanding.

‘I don't have to want them in Kansas. Closing Guantanamo Bay doesn’t mean the prisoners come to the heartland of America. I think we need to find the appropriate place to house those detainees.’

Okay... where do we put them?

Who knows, with this crew in charge, they may end up in a Republican district.

Or worse yet, they may just end up in your backyard.

Contrary to what President Barack Hussein Obama would have the American people believe, the “stimulus” law will create winners and losers. Almost any government program dealing with finances is going to create winners and losers—this is NOT a win-win proposition.

Having some economic knowledge, there are at least three major problems with the “stimulus” law:

1) The law allows the federal government to manipulate free market supply and demand so that the federal government decides who the winners are and, by implication, who the losers are. The government has little short term control over supply so it is mostly dealing with the demand side of the equation. Thus, the federal government has decided that the demand side should be in such areas as improving infrastructure such as roads, bridges, sewers, sidewalks, statutes, monuments, and whatever “worthy” project that might slip through; education resulting in a continuation of and strengthening of the concept that the government knows best on how, what, and when to educate our children; health care, including no doubt help to such groups as Planned Murderhood to continue to MURDER our children; and increased welfare programs making more and more citizens and businesses more and more dependent upon the federal government.

2) The law will, in general, penalize those who have been making sound economic decisions (someone has to pay for the 787,000,000,000 dollar increase in government spending—that money doesn’t just grow on trees) and will reward those individuals, businesses, and governments who have made poor economic decisions—such as going into debt by spending more money than they have or will have. This is not a new concept with Barack Hussein Obama. In the recent past, he and others (including unfortunately former President George W. Bush) wanted to reward individuals who violate our immigration laws with American citizenship. That was defeated. This reward of irresponsibility was not. By the way, why not hire people to arrest, detain, and deport illegal immigrants who are working jobs in this country or are benefiting from our social service programs? This will provide employment for Americans both to remove illegal immigrants from our nation and free-up jobs that were once occupied by those same illegal immigrants. The argument that Americans won’t work those jobs should not be echoed since our unemployment is supposedly so high. Isn’t any job better than no job?

3) The “stimulus” law, at best, is trying to attack a symptom of the major problem within the United States rather than the major cause of our problems—the absolutely horrendous moral decay that has occurred within our nation. Thus, the federal government instead of dealing with our self indulgence, demand for instant gratification, and demand for rights without responsibilities is, in general, throwing money at those very people who have been seeking self indulgence, instant gratification, and rights without responsibilities. Go figure!

“Jesus replied, ‘I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.’” John 8: 34 (NIV)

“They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.” II Peter 2: 19 (NIV)

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” Galatians 6: 7-8 (NIV)

One thing that libertines learned from Adolph Hitler, the Great Depression of the 1930’s, and the events of that era, is that if you repeat a lie often enough, with enough conviction, it often becomes the perceived truth. Libertines have also learned that if they are allowed to define the terms used in a discussion, then they are more likely to “win” that discussion. Thus, libertines love to use the terms fetus instead of baby, prejudice and/or discrimination instead of “you don’t think as I do,” and rights without including responsibilities which are inseparable within a democratic framework since anyone person’s rights tend to encroach upon the rights of others. For example, if you have the right to MURDER someone, that just might encroach upon that person’s right to life!

When used by the libertine mass media and their henchmen, lies and half-truths are passed off as creditable and acceptable news. Thus, it is with the following “news” story published in the Peoria Journal Star on December 2, 2008, page A2. The story is entitled “U.S. economy in a recession.” The story is rather long so I won’t quote all of it. The writers (two of them identified as Jeannine Aversa and Martin Crutsinger) of the story are identified as “AP economics writers.” Of course, their credentials that qualify them to be economic writers are not given other than they are employed by the Associated Press. The selected segments of the article:

The big lie is given nine paragraphs into the story. It has its own sub-headline entitled “It’s official.” The big lie declares “Adding to the gloom, the National Bureau of Economic Research, a group of academic economists (I don’t know when this elitist group was given the power to declare when a recession has occurred—my addition.), concluded Monday that the country has been suffering (notice the emotionally charged word—my addition) through a recession since December 2007. (SINCE DECEMBER 2007 and they just came to this conclusion—one year later?—my addition)

With NBER’s decision (When again was this group given the power to define when a recession has and has not begun?—my addition), the United States has fallen into two recessions during Bush’s eight years in office. (This is the second big lie in these two paragraphs. This big lie was started in 2001-2002 but HAS NEVER BEEN true—my addition.) The first started in March 2001 and ended in November of that year.”

The TRUTH: By definition, a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative growth in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In 2001, there were no two consecutive quarters through the year in which GDP was negative. Therefore, by definition there was no recession in 2001. That is the economic TRUTH!

The TRUTH: In an article published in the Peoria Journal Star on October 31, 2008, page A2 the following headline was used: “GDP drops, economy jolts into decline.” The sub-headline declares: “Consumer spending sees biggest drop in 28 years; bad recession looms.” The author of this story is identified as Jeannine Aversa—AP economics writer. Notice that this is the same name as one of the two writers identified in the news story published in December. Notice too the emotionally charged word—jolts—used in the headline. Notice that the sub-headline says that a recession looms. It does not say that a recession has been on going since DECEMBER of 2007 and yet the GDPs for those previous quarters are already known. Notice finally that this story with its jolting headline and looming future was published just before the November election.

The TRUTH: Along with the story, a bar graph was published showing the GDP for the United States from the fourth quarter of 2004 through the first three quarters of 2008. The source for the bar graph was given as the Department of Commerce. The bar graph showed that in the first quarter of 2007 there was a very slight growth in GDP. In the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2007, the GDP growth was close to five percent in both quarters. In the 4th quarter of 2007, GDP fell slightly but by less than –0.3%. GDP grew both in the 1st and 2nd quarters of 2008. The 1st quarter was less than 1%—but still growth—and the 2nd quarter grew almost 3%. For all of the period from the 1st quarter of 2007 through the 2nd quarter of 2008, there was only one quarter with a negative growth number—that being the 4th quarter of 2007. Therefore, by definition there could not possibly have been a recession going on because there was NEVER two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth. NEVER! One would think that “economics writer” Jeannine Aversa, who wrote both stories, would know this small, but very major FACT!

The TRUTH: In fact, when the December story was written there was no way to know that the 4th quarter of 2008 would have a negative GDP number. It did and the United States now is officially in recession since we have now had two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth—the 3rd quarter of 2008 and the 4th quarter of 2008. (The final adjusted number for the 4th quarter of 2008 has not yet been published to my knowledge.)

The TRUTH: However, the TRUTH is that during the eight years of the Bush Administration there has only been two quarters of recession—the last half year of the Administration. And the only period of recession was when the Democrats controlled Congress and by Constitutional authority controlled the purse strings of government—Article I, Section 8 of the United States Constitution.

So why has this “academic” group lied to the American people? Why has the mass media perpetuated the lie? Could it be to “blame” George W. Bush for an alleged “one year old recession” and try to make it look like the recession existed long before Barack Obama took office? They want the American people to believe that the recession is over twice as long as it actually is!

They must truly believe that you can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time. Or do they actually believe that they have the power to fool all of the people all of the time?

As President Lincoln has been given credit for saying “You can fool some of the people all the time and all the people some of the time; but you can’t fool all the people all the time.”

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” Galatians 6: 7-8 (NIV)

I plan to continue with a few more comments on the “stimulus” law and economics. First though, a side topic that is indicative, perhaps, of what is in store for us as the “stimulus” law begins to work its “magic.”

The following commentary is from The Wall Street Journal, February 17, 2009, page A14.

“I want my DTV

Don’t change that channel. If you’ve turned on a TV in the past six months, you’ve probably heard that today, February 17, 2009, is the day that broadcast television is supposed to switch to digital signals from analog. After the transition, older televisions that are not hooked up to cable, satellite or fiber-optic service won’t work

But here’s the rub. Today was the day the big switch was supposed to happen. It was written into law back in 2005. But two weeks ago, Congress delayed the transition to June 12. So the digital revolution will be televised, but not until late spring—at least for that small fraction of Americans with rabbit-ear antennas still perched atop their TV sets.

That’s right—after all that advertising, all those public-service announcements about February 17, and despite nearly four years to plan for that date, Congress itself switched at the last minute.

The official explanation is that the Department of Commerce ran out of money to issue coupons for digital-converter boxes to people who applied for them. These boxes cost between $40 and $80. And Congress, in 2005, decided to subsidize the converters by issuing a $40 coupon. (Was this an example of an earlier Congressional stimulus program?—my addition) Then last November, Commerce warned that it might run out of money to issue coupons if Congress didn’t lift a $1.34 billion (1,034,000,000 dollars—my addition) financing cap. (At $40 per coupon, if there were no other costs which of course there are, that would be 25,850,000 coupons—my addition.) Congress did nothing. Commerce also suggested that, since nearly 50% of the coupons were expiring unused, Congress could amend the law to allow more coupons to be issued under the cap by taking into account the actual redemption rate. Congress declined to do that too.

January rolled around, and sure enough the coupons ran out four days into the new year. Congressional leaders naturally blamed the Bush Administration and John Podesta wrote a letter on behalf of the Obama transition calling for the switch to be delayed. Congress then passed the Digital Delay Act, pushing the date to June but allowing stations to petition the Federal Communications Commission for permission to switch off analog broadcasts today.

Out of some 1,800 stations around the country, 491 requested permission to go all digital. Another 200 have already switched off analog or were scheduled to by today. So instead of a clean switch, we’ll have as many as one-third of U.S. stations going digital today while two-thirds continue to broadcast both analog and digital signals until June. It takes a lot of electricity to beam those signals—tens of thousands of dollars worth (another “stimulus” example of Congress wisely spending our money?—my addition), to say nothing of the carbon footprint (another major concern of Congress—my addition) of all that double-broadcasting. But we digress.

No doubt there are some people still waiting for their coupons because they waited until the last minute to request them. (If you requested a coupon, it expired because you didn’t use it before the expiration date, can you request another coupon?—my addition) And it’s possible that some are so desperate to catch the next installment of “24” that they’ll throw a fit if Fox doesn’t come in over their rabbit ears—but not so desperate to, you know, buy a $40 converter box with their own money. But the transition was never going to be without challenges, and the June 12 switch will still leave someone, somewhere, with a dark TV. (Do you think Congress will try to delay the change once again when the June 12 date approaches and I still haven’t bought a converter box?—my addition)

The difference now is that Congress and the Obama Administration will have full ownership of any snafus. (Maybe Congress will buy all of us holdouts new digital ready TV’s. That’s what I am waiting for—another stimulus program to grow TV production!—my addition) Meantime, there will be confusion about the transition and many angry phone calls. In Washington, this is what passes for regularly scheduled programming.”

Two TVs in my house. One is on cable and one has rabbit-ears. I thought about what to do with the second. Since I’m only watching the 6 PM local news and did watch a few football games since the election, I decided to let the second one go dark. I’ll basically not notice any difference and can watch the 10 PM local news if I want to catch a local news program.

Meanwhile, all the local Peoria stations, except for the ABC affiliate, switched to digital on the 17th. I, in the past, would switch between the ABC and NBC broadcasts during the 6 PM news. Now, of course, it is just the ABC news.

However, out of curiosity, last evening (the 19th) I switched to NBC during a commercial. NBC is broadcasting in analog a commercial about the switch having been made and what the viewer needs to do to be able to watch the NBC station. Why not just continue to broadcast the news? We haven’t heard all of this before?

Again, out of curiosity, I then checked out the Fox station. They were broadcasting a similar commercial except in Spanish. (Anyway, it sounded Spanish to me and I lived in Tucson for a number of years.) Checking the CBS affiliate, the airwave was dark. CBS seems to have just cut the signal not caring to educate us on how to successfully receive the signal necessary to watch CBS programming. How uncaring? I didn’t bother to check PBS and can’t receive any other channels from that particular TV.

Anyway, it seems that I have until June 12, at the least, to continue watching ABC local news at 6 PM. Then, it should be (?) in the dark for that TV. Too bad, too sad!

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” Galatians 6: 7-8 (NIV)

Many, if not most, local and State governmental units are writing their “Christmas” list and checking it twice. They are writing their wish list to be handed federal money as part of the “economic stimulus” law.

According to an article in the Peoria Journal Star published on 2/2/09, page B5 (before the law was actually passed—wish list preparedness), Peoria, the largest city in our area, has already narrowed its list down to two projects—it seems that projects will be more favorably looked upon if they are “shovel ready”—sewer improvement and sidewalk projects. However, the sewer improvement project must be accomplished whether or not the federal government gives stimulus money to the project. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has already ordered Peoria to complete the sewer project since Peoria has been violating federal law by polluting the Illinois River.

Consequently, if this project is funded by stimulus money, it will be neither a creation of new jobs nor a saving of jobs. It will simply be a switch of funding source from the city of Peoria (and possibly the State of Illinois) to the federal government. The project might start sooner, might cost more but it is a project that must be done and the city of Peoria knows it must be done—either they pay or the feds pay. The only way this project could be classified as a job creation project is if the city of Peoria uses the funds, which would have been used to complete the sewer project, to finance yet another project which at this time has not been anticipated. In these economic times when finances are tight does anyone actually expect that to happen?

One may question whether sidewalks are the type of projects anticipated for the stimulus money. Perhaps, sidewalks will be impressive compared to other projects proposed by other localities. The sewer project certainly will be accomplished if Peoria does not wish to violate the EPA order. Yet, should such a project, which must be accomplished anyway, be using stimulus money to achieve the completion of the project?

If I remember correctly, according to Illinois’ Comptroller, Illinois is 9 billion dollars in debt. Illinois is suppose to receive the sixth largest payout of stimulus money going to State governments—about eight billion dollars. How much of that money (if necessary by “slight of books”) will be used to pay-off the State debt rather than actually create new jobs with projects which would not otherwise be accomplished.

One obvious problem with requiring or just requesting that stimulus money be used for “shovel ready” projects is that local or State money has already been or will soon be allocated to cover those projects—otherwise they would not be “shovel ready.” Will all this allocated money or soon to be allocated money be transferred to other, new projects? If not, it is not a job creation concept. It is a transfer of payer concept with the federal government footing the bill rather than the State and/or local government(s).

Why hasn’t the mass media pointed out this fact? Or have they?

800,000,000,000

Okay. I took a little liberty with the figure. It is actually suppose to be 787,000,000,000. I rounded up 13 billion worth. Probably, before all is said and done, it will be 800,000,000,000 and quite probably more than that. Congress can always find more money to spend to “help the economy.” 787,000,000,000, of course, is the cost today of the stimulus plan passed by Congress to “bring the nation back from the worst recession” since the Great Depression.

300,000,000

300,000,000 is the approximate estimated population of the United States in 2006 according to Encarta. The article did not identify if that was citizens only and my guess is that it includes more than citizens. However, for our purposes, I will use 300,000,000 as the number of U.S. citizens including all men, women, and children.

Let us do a bit of comparison by dropping zeros in groups of three as far as we can. The original numbers were:

800,000,000,000
300,000,000

Drop three zeros from each number and we now have:

800,000,000
300,000

Drop three more zeros from each number and we now have:

800,000
300

Drop two more zeros from each number and we now have:

8,000
3

Divide 3 into 8,000 and we have 2,666.67 dollars in stimulus money to be spent for every man, woman, and child who are United States citizens in the United States.

Who decides how that 2,666.67 dollars for every man, woman, and child is to be spent? A majority of 535 members of Congress and the President of the United States.

Personally, if a stimulus package should be passed and that is very suspect, I think I’d rather have each citizen be given 2,666.67 dollars to use as they desire based upon supply and demand.

Of course, that will not happen because one thing the presently passed “stimulate law” does do is give the majority members of Congress and the President tremendous power and control that is, by definition, trying to manipulate supply and demand as the powers that be think best.

Gunslinger Publications L.C. Website

www.theblacksword.net
www.gunslingerpublications.com

The wait is over! I have been asked to sell my book—The Black Sword: The Secret U.S. Army in Vietnam through a website. That website is now up and running. It can be accessed through either www.theblacksword.net (Note: it is .net; not .com) or www.gunslingerpublications.com. It is my hope that eventually The Black Sword books will be a five part series. Meanwhile, I plan to write other books and publish other books by other authors.

I received a call Wednesday from a client in Arizona who had bought the book. He said the book was great (his choice of word; not mine) and he had read it in two days—couldn’t put it down. I think the book is good or I would not put my name on it. Try it. I think you’ll enjoy the read.

To all of you who purchased books through the mail—thank you. That option will still be available—by check made out to Don Vance and mailed to Don Vance, P.O. Box 481, Morton, Illinois, 61550. Each book is $13. I’m changing the shipping and handling charges for the books based upon the charges established at the website.

U.S Shipping Rates:

Order Amount = Shipping

Less than $40.00 = $4.00
$40.00 to $70.00 = $6.00
$71.00 to $99.00 = $8.00
$100 and up = $10.00

Foreign orders: check the Website for contact information

Non-profits: I have a page set up to provide contact information and other information if you would like to sell my book directly. My books will NOT be available through book stores at this time and my plan is not at any time. Therefore, there will not be competition from regular book outlets.

Since I have to pay a fee to accept credit card orders on the website, I will continue to pay the sales tax for any Arizona or Illinois resident who purchases the book(s) through the mail.

It is my plan to offer other products on the website, to have a page of services available, to eventually have affiliate products, and to provide links to other sites.

Be patient. The site is being built piecemeal and will hopefully expand and improve. I expect some kinks in the process. “The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray.”—Robert Burns

Thank you.

I received the following on 02/10/09 by e-mail and, since it is time sensitive, I thought I best post it tonight. I hope to write more about the economy at a later date. Probably, it will not be until late April or May. I think the proposed “stimulus” has some possible (more likely probable) negative long term consequences.

This is the first I’ve heard of this organization. The e-mail:

“The Fight is not over

Dear Taxpayer

Will you join me in taking a stand in the first major policy battle of President Obama’s Administration?

Stop the Pelosi-Reid-Obama Trillion Dollar Spending bill, Sign our Online NO stimulus Petition Today.”

“Earlier today in the U.S. Senate we suffered a difficult defeat as the $838 billion senate version of the Pelosi-Reid-Obama spending bill passed the senate with 61 votes. While today’s vote is a disappointing setback we cannot be discouraged. Much of this fight still lies ahead in the next few days.

Despite today’s passage in the Senate, this fight is far from over!

The bill will still have to go to conference to work out differences between the House and Senate versions, before coming back to both chambers for another vote. They will fight to add back as much pork as possible, including brand new pork not in either House or Senate version.

You can fight back today by clicking here and joining the growing army of taxpayers saying NO by signing Americans for Prosperity’s petition to stop this disastrous trillion-dollar debt scheme.

We’ve got to keep raising awareness and increase the pressure against this spending and debt outrage. Thanks to the help of our signers forwarding this to their friends and family, calling talk radio, and promoting it on the internet, we’ve blown past 200,000 signed petitions!

Just what is wrong with this bill?

• Under the auspices of a ‘Comparative Effectiveness Review’ the package heavily funds the first steps towards the government-mandated rationing of health care and tramples your right to medical privacy.

• The so-called ‘Stimulus Package’ is being sold to taxpayers as an investment in useful infrastructure like roads and bridges. But the facts prove otherwise. Only 3.6% of the scheme’s $838 billion price tag would actually go to real, practical infrastructure projects—roads and bridges.

• This trillion-dollar debt and spending scheme will provide little or no stimulus, but will put each and every American household in at least $6,700 of new debt, to be paid by our children and grandchildren.

It is critical that we send a loud and clear message to DC politicians that ordinary citizens simply cannot afford the crushing burden and devastating consequences of this initiative.

Please act today to make your voice heard—and encourage your friends and family to do the same—by signing AFP’s petition.”

Sincerely,

Tim Phillips
President, Americans for Prosperity

“Feature story (from GreenWatchAmerica at www.greenwatchamerica.com—my addition)

As most of us know, the theory of global warming, very simply, is that unprecedented levels of man made greenhouse gasses are responsible for trapping heat in the atmosphere of the earth, warming the planet to unprecedented levels. With that in mind, if you could place two headlines together, side by side, that would, at the very least, cause a modicum of doubt in the minds of scientists and politicians, wouldn’t it be these two?

Climate Scientists Say 2008 Will be Coolest Year of the Decade
Greenhouse Gasses Hit Modern Day Highs

Of course, in the world of climate alarmism, there is no room for doubt, so when asked if this would be evidence that global warming is slowing, Dr. Peter Stott, the manager of understanding and attributing climate change at the Met Office’s Hadley Centre, replied, ‘Absolutely not. If we are going to understand climate change we need to look at long-term trends.’

If decreasing temperatures are not a sign that global warming is slowing, I have just one question for you, Dr. Stott. What is?

To a degree (no pun intended), Dr. Stott is correct. A single year does not a trend make. But before this year, a single year was plenty for the climate alarmists to latch on to as evidence of an irreversible trend. Repeatedly, they would evoke 1998 as the hottest year of the century (even though their science was wrong; 1934 was actually hotter), and after virtually every major storm in the last ten years, someone would claim this was a sign of things to come.

Is it too much to ask that the alarmists at least notice their own double standards?
