showed images from actual Planned Parenthood sex-education materials used for children as young as 10 years of age (Did you get that? The material cant be printed in a public newspaper but it is USED in a government school classroom for children as young as 10!—my addition). ALL (American Life League—my addition) couldn’t agree more. The rejected ad can be seen here:

‘The question we must ask is: Why is the Obama administration funneling $350 million to push this filth into classrooms while at the same time telling us we don’t have money for White House tours, TSA agents, or border security?’ asked Judie Brown, president and cofounder of ALL. ‘Starting in kindergarten, funded with our tax dollars, PP uses graphic cartoons to saturate children with sexual imagery that encourages them to focus on sexuality, engage in sex, and accept dangerous aberrant sexual acts as perfectly normal (If they did not, the supply ofunwantedchildren might begin to dry up! Cant have that! The profit is in the MURDERS of unborn children! No MURDERS = no profit!—my addition). To raise public awareness about Planned Parenthood’s controversial sex education (It is not controversial to them!—my addition)—more accurately described as sexual indoctrination (True! Why do you think a majority of young adults believe there is nothing wrong with homosexual behavior? They have been indoctrinated in the government schools, in the movies, on TV to think that homosexual perversion isnormal”—my addition)—ALL planned a series of advertisements revealing what and how children are really taught in PP’S so-called ‘comprehensive sex education (Which one chamber of the Illinois General Assembly just passed!—my addition).’ These are programs that are already in many schools and will reach all public schools as currently mandated in Obamacare.

The Washington Post rejected the advertisement simply saying that, without disguising the pictures, it was ‘too graphic.’ The only images in the ad are from Planned Parenthood-endorsed sources. If they are too graphic for adults reading the Washington Post, then they certainly should not be in elementary school classrooms (One would think so wouldnt one?—my addition).

Likewise, the New York Times offered to run the ad only if ALL would agree to blur the pictures. Its staff suggested that they could run a disclaimer saying, ‘Image too shocking for the New York Times audience. To see actual image and for more information, please visit:

When the clinic worker is asked what happens if the baby (after the abortion) is breathing or twitching, she responds:

‘The solution will make it stop. It’s not going to be moving around in the jar ... that’s the whole purpose of the solution.’

Live Action released a second undercover video today, revealing how leading D.C. late-term abortion doctor Cesare Santengelo would leave a baby struggling for life after a failed abortion to die.

‘Hopefully we’ll get this pregnancy out intact, but it doesn’t always happen that way,’ Santangelo said to an undercover Live Action investigator who was 24 weeks pregnant. ‘I try and sever the umbilical cord first, and we wait for that to stop pulsing, and this way the fetus is expired first (Is MURDERED First!—my addition).’

When asked by the undercover investigator what will happen if the baby survives the abortion, Doctor Santangelo says:

‘Technically—you know, legally we would be obligated to help it, you know, to survive. But, you know, it probably wouldn’t. It’s all in how vigorously you do things to help a fetus survive at this point. Let’s say you went into labor, the membranes ruptured, and you delivered before we got to the termination part of the procedure here, you know? Then we would do things—we would—we would not help it. We wouldn’t intubate. It would be, you know, uh, a person, a terminal person in the hospital, let’s say, that had cancer, you know? You wouldn’t do any extra procedures to help that person survive. Like ‘do not resuscitate’ orders. We would do the same things here.’

It has become blatantly clear through this investigation that Kermit Gosnell is not alone in his disturbing late-term abortion practices. These gruesome practices are rampant through the abortion industry in America (Of course! They are MURDERERS in white coats! What can you expect?—my addition).

April 26, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – President Obama took a combative stance during his speech to Planned Parenthood today, pledging his unconditional support to the abortion giant, and, at more than one point, taking a swipe at pro-life activists who oppose the organization.

‘No matter how great the challenge, no matter how fierce the opposition, there’s one thing that the past few years have shown,’ said President Obama, ‘that Planned Parenthood is not going anywhere. It’s not going anywhere today. It’s not going anywhere tomorrow (But the day after, look out! Obviously, the President is ignoring the lawsuits against Planned MURDERHOOD! What he is saying though is that as long as he is President, Planned MURDERHOOD will not be prosecuted for the fraud they are accused of. Lets impeach the President for not enforcing the laws of the land! There certainly is grounds for it!—my addition).’

He continued: ‘As long as we’ve got to fight to make sure women have access to quality affordable healthcare (MURDER is NOT healthcare! How the Left distorts language!—my addition), and as long as we’ve got to fight to protect a women’s right to make her own choices about her own health (MURDERING an unborn baby is not health! Perhaps he cut his biology classes in high school! How he LIES!—my addition), I want you to know that you’ve also got a president who’s going to be with you fighting with you every step of the way (To your detriment before GOD unless you repent and you just might be past the point of repenting!—my addition).’

Obama was greeted enthusiastically by the crowd of some 1,000 Planned Parenthood supporters. ‘You’re making me blush,’ he said in response to the protracted standing ovation.

During his speech he aimed his sights directly at pro-life activists. ‘The fact is, after decades of progress, there’s still those who want to turn back the clock to policies more suited to the 1950s than the 21st Century (To stop the MURDER of unborn babies? He is absolutely right! Is he saying the 21st Century is the Century of MURDER?—my addition),’ Obama said. ‘And they’ve been involved in an orchestrated and historic effort to roll back basic rights when it comes to women’s health (It is NOT a right and NEVER has been and NEVER will be arightto MURDER your unborn baby! GOD gives us our rights and HE surely did not give us the right to MURDER our young!—my addition).’

‘When politicians try to turn Planned Parenthood into a punching bag, they’re not just talking about you,’ he said. ‘They’re talking about the millions of women who you serve (Millions that they turn into MURDERERS! Some service! Not the service GOD talks about or wants!—my addition).’

He also recounted how Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, ‘describes Planned Parenthood as the only organization that she’s ever been at where there are opponents who, in her own words, ‘literally get up every day trying to figure out how to keep us from doing our work (Absolutely correct! Because yourworkis immoral!—my addition).’’

He then quipped, ‘If she had worked in the administration she would be more familiar with this phenomenon.’

Obama had been widely criticized for speaking to Planned Parenthood in the shadow of the trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell, who stands accused of murdering several newborn babies after botched late-term abortions. During his speech, the president made no reference to the trial, and avoided any direct mention of the word abortion, instead referencing ‘choice (I thought Planned MURDERHOOD was trying to move away from the wordchoice?”—my addition).’

Obama had originally been scheduled to headline Planned Parenthood’s gala on Thursday evening, but backed out at the last minute earlier this week, saying that he wanted to spend more time at a memorial service for the victims of the fertilizer plant explosion in West Texas.

In his speech he also pleaded with Planned Parenthood clinic workers to help him get the word out about his health care reform law. Initial reports are suggesting that enrollment for the law’s health care exchanges are dismally low (I wonder why?—my addition), putting the whole law in jeopardy.

He concluded his speech saying, ‘Thank you Planned Parenthood. God bless you (I think that is called blasphemy! He does not get to select who GOD blesses and who GOD does not bless!—my addition).’

President Obama was reportedly the first sitting president ever to address Planned Parenthood (Even Bill Clinton did not?—my addition).

In the lead up to today’s speech, pro-life activists had demanded that Obama cancel his appearance, pointing not only to the Gosnell trial, but also to Planned Parenthood lobbyist Alisa LaPolt Snow’s testimony before the Florida House apparently defending infanticide, and revelations of horrendous conditions at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Delaware.

In a statement, Lila Rose of Live Action News, had said: ‘Over the past few weeks, we have heard the brutal details of the slaughter of innocent human beings that goes on within the walls of many abortion clinics, including Gosnell’s ‘House of Horrors’ in Philadelphia and the ‘meat-market’ ‘assembly-line’ Planned Parenthood of Delaware.’

‘These accounts by former clinic staff have shell-shocked the nation and it is incumbent upon the President to reconsider his support for the abortion industry and Planned Parenthood, which last year profited from abortion $87 million dollars committing over 300,000 abortions,’ she said.

Obama has long had a close relationship with Planned Parenthood, which donated $15 million to his re-election campaign last year (The House should NOT pass any appropriation bill funding Planned MURDERHOOD! Period! To do so, is to be in cahoots with MURDERERS!!!—my addition).

In a press release published earlier this week announcing the president’s planned appearance at their gala, Cecile Richards heaped accolades on the president, saying: ‘President Obama has done more than any president in history for women’s health and rights (Translation: For the MURDER of unborn babies! About that, she is right!—my addition.’

During the recent election cycle he repeatedly touted Planned Parenthood on the campaign trail, and condemned Republican lawmakers for seeking to defund the abortion giant. On election day, Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards went door-to-door canvassing for the president.”

Black also blasted President Barack Obama for not speaking out against the ‘house of horrors’ abortion clinic run by Gosnell, who would sever the spinal cords of babies with scissors after they had survived late-term abortion procedures.

‘Mr. Speaker, I stand here today outraged and deeply saddened by the heartbreaking story of the abortion Doctor Kermit Gosnell,’ said Black. ‘This is the man currently on trial for the murder of eight people, seven of which were newborns who were killed after surviving late-term botched abortions in his house of horrors clinic (The court judge dismissed three of the murder charges.—my addition).’

‘But Gosnell didn’t act alone,’ she said. ‘He had a host of silent co-conspirators who referred women to his practice knowing full well of the horrors that went on behind those closed doors. And, meanwhile, the State boards gave Gosnell a free pass for 17 years by failing to inspect his clinic (Not to mention the original illegal and unconstitutional court decisions and the knowing support by men and women in Congress and several Presidents, including the current one, to the continuing slaughter of the innocent! And we condemned Adolph Hitler for HIS atrocitiesours have been much longer and have MURDERED far more of the innocent!—my addition).’

Gosnell, 72, is currently on trial for the murder of four babies born alive and a mother, who overdosed at his clinic the Women’s Medical Society in West Philadelphia. Gosnell was originally charged with seven counts of first-degree murder, but Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey P. Minehart dropped three of the charges on Wednesday, apparently concluding that the prosecution did not present enough evidence that the babies in those cases were ‘not viable,’ or born alive.

Gosnell is also facing charges of infanticide, conspiracy, abortion at 24 or more weeks, theft, corruption of minors, solicitation and other related offenses. The six-week long trial is set to conclude on Monday, with closing arguments after Gosnell’s defense rested on Wednesday, without offering any witnesses. Gosnell did not take the stand.

Representative Black also condemned President Obama for not speaking out against Gosnell who, according to the grand jury in the case, had killed ‘hundreds’ of babies over the years by snipping their spinal cords (The President should also be roundly condemned for his continued support of these barbaric MURDERS and his promotion of the same in both the United States and around the world! We have a MURDERER in the White House! An unindicted co-conspirator!—my addition).

‘When asked about Gosnell’s crime, our president tells us he has no comment,’ Black said. ‘Where is your outrage, Mr. President (He can not be outraged! He would lose points with Planned MURDERHOOD and he would lose money donations!—my addition)?’

‘Are you too busy preparing your remarks for tomorrow night’s Planned Parenthood fundraising gala?’ she said. ‘My heart breaks that our country has reached a point by where we are all not outraged by a practice that ends a beating heart and takes the lives of the most vulnerable in our society.’

‘May God forgive us, I yield back my time,’ said the congresswoman.

Obama rescheduled his keynote address at the annual gala for Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the country, on Wednesday. Instead of speaking on Thursday evening, he will deliver remarks on Friday, so he can attend a memorial service for the victims of last week’s fertilizer plant explosion in Texas (A service for those killed accidently while speaking in support of a group that MURDERS unborn babies by the thousands every year! Seriously! And we elected him once and reelected him a second time? What is wrong with this countrySIN!—my addition).

Last week in an appearance on NBC’s Today show, Obama said he could not comment on the case ‘because it’s an active trial.’

‘What I can say is this. You know, I think, President [Bill] Clinton said it pretty well when he said abortion should be safe, legal, and rare (Wrong on all three and he certainly does NOT support the MURDER of the unborn as being rare! By this statement though, he is admitting that every abortion is a MURDER! If NOT, there is NO reason why it should be rare! Why do you think that the mainstream media does not challenge him on this point? That is the most cockamamie nonsense that has come out of this whole ghastly period of our history and the mainstream media doesnt challenge it!—my addition),’ said Obama.

‘If an individual, carrying out an abortion, operating a clinic, or doing anything else is violating medical ethics, violating the law, then they should be prosecuted (Really!—my addition),’ Obama said.”

Religion and Public Life in America

The following is adapted from a speech delivered on February 20, 2013, at a Hillsdale College National Leadership Seminar in Bonita Springs, Florida.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY is being redefined in America, or at least many would like it to be. Our secular establishment wants to reduce the autonomy of religious institutions and limit the influence of faith in the public square. The reason is not hard to grasp. In America, ‘religion’ largely means Christianity, and today our secular culture views orthodox Christian churches as troublesome, retrograde, and reactionary forces. They’re seen as anti-science, anti-gay, and anti-women—which is to say anti-progress as the Left defines progress. Not surprisingly, then, the Left believes society will be best served if Christians are limited in their influence on public life. And in the short run this view is likely to succeed. There will be many arguments urging Christians to keep their religion strictly religious rather than ‘political.’ And there won’t just be arguments; there will be laws as well. We’re in the midst of climate change—one that’s getting colder and colder toward religion.

Recent court cases and controversies suggest trends unfriendly to religion in public life. In 2005, a former teacher at Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School in Redford, Michigan, filed an employment lawsuit claiming discrimination based on disability. The school fired her for violating St. Paul’s teaching that Christians should not bring their disputes before secular judges. The subsequent lawsuit revolved around the question of whether a religious school could invoke a religious principle to justify firing an employee. The school said it could, drawing on a legal doctrine known as the ministerial exception, which allows religious institutions wide latitude in hiring and firing their religious leaders. It’s in the nature of legal arguments to be complex and multi-layered, but in this case the Obama administrations lawyers made a shockingly blunt argument: Their brief claimed that there should be no ministerial exception.

The Supreme Court rejected this argument in a unanimous 9-0 vote. But it’s telling nonetheless that lawyers in the Justice Department wanted to eliminate this exception. Their argument was straightforward: Government needs to have broad powers to address the problem of discrimination—in this case disability—as well as other injustices. Conceding too much to religious institutions limits those powers. Why should the theological doctrines of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, or of any other church, trump the legal doctrines of the United States when the important principle of non-discrimination is at stake? It is an arresting question, to say the least—especially when we remember that the Left is currently pushing to add gay marriage to the list of civil rights.

Concerns about the autonomy of religious institutions are also at work in the Obama administration’s tussle with the Catholic Church and her religious allies over the mandate to provide free contraceptives, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs. After the initial public outcry, the administration announced a supposed compromise, which has been recently revised and re-proposed. The Obama administration allows that churches and organizations directly under the control of those churches are religious employers and can opt out of the morally controversial coverage. But religious colleges and charities are not and cannot. To them, the administration offers a so-called accommodation.

The details are complex, but a recent statement issued by Cardinal Dolan of New York identifies the key issue: Who counts as a religious employer? It’s a question closely related to the issue in the Hosanna-Tabor case, which asks who counts as a religious employee. Once again the Obama administration seeks a narrow definition, “accommodating” others in an act of lèse majesté, as it were. The Catholic Church and her allies want a broad definition that includes Catholic health care, Catholic universities, and Catholic charities. The Church knows that it cannot count on accommodations—after all, when various states such as Illinois passed laws allowing gay adoptions, they did not ‘accommodate’ Catholic charities, but instead demanded compliance with principles of non-discrimination, forcing the Church to shut down her adoption agencies in those jurisdictions.

Cardinal Dolan’s statement went still further. For-profit companies are not religious in the way that Notre Dame University is religious. Nonetheless, the religious beliefs of those who own and run businesses in America should be accorded some protection. This idea the Obama administration flatly rejects. By their progressive way of thinking, economic life should be under the full and unlimited control of the federal government.

Religious liberty is undermined in a third and different way as well. For a long time, political theorists like John Rawls have argued that our laws must be based on so-called public reason, which is in fact an ambiguous, ill-defined concept that gives privileged status to liberalism. In 2010, Federal District Court Judge Vaughn Walker overturned Proposition 8—the ballot measure that reversed the California Supreme Court’s 2006 decision that homosexuals have a right to marry—citing the lack of a rational basis for thinking that only men and women can marry. ‘The evidence shows conclusively,’ he wrote, ‘that Proposition 8 enacts, without reason, a private moral view that same-sex couples are inferior to opposite-sex couples.’ He continues by observing that many supporters of Proposition 8 were motivated by their religious convictions, which—following Rawls—he presumes should not be allowed to govern public law.

This line of thinking is not unique to Judge Walker. The influence of Rawls has been extensive, leading to restrictions on the use of religious reasons or even religiously-influenced reasons in public debate. In striking down Texas sodomy laws, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy noted that moral censure of homosexuality has ‘been shaped by religious beliefs.’ The idea seems to be that moral views historically supported by religionwhich of course means all moral views other than modern secular onesare constitutionally suspect.

Here we come to the unifying feature of contemporary challenges to religious freedom—the desire to limit the influence of religion over public life. In the world envisioned by Obama administration lawyers, churches will have freedom as ‘houses of worship,’ but unless they accept the secular consensus they can’t inspire their adherents to form institutions to educate and serve society in accordance with the principles of their faith. Under a legal regime influenced by the concept of public reason, religious people are free to speakbut when their voices contradict the secular consensus, theyre not allowed into our legislative chambers or courtrooms.

Thus our present clashes over religious liberty. The Constitution protects religious liberty in two ways. First, it prohibits laws establishing a religion. This prevents the dominant religion from using the political power of majority rule to privilege its own doctrines to the disadvantage of others. Second, it prohibits laws that limit the free exercise of religion. What we’re seeing today is a secular liberalism that wants to expand the prohibition of establishment to silence articulate religious voices and disenfranchise religiously motivated voters, and at the same time to narrow the scope of free exercise so that the new secular morality can reign over American society unimpeded.

Rise of the Nones

This shift in legal thinking on the Left reflects underlying religious trends. As the religious character of our society changes, so do our assumptions about religious freedom. The main change has been the rise of the Nones. In the 1950s, around three percent of Americans checked the ‘none’ box when asked about their religious affiliation. That number has grown, especially in the last decade, to 20 percent of the population. And Nones are heavily represented in elite culture. A great deal of higher education is dominated by Nones, as are important cultural institutions, the media, and Hollywood. They are conscious of their power, and they feel the momentum of their growth.

At the same time, the number of Americans who say they go to church every week has remained strikingly constant over the last 50 years, at around 35 percent. Sociologists of religion think this self-reported number is higher than the actual one, which may be closer to 25 percent. In any event, the social reality is the same. As the Nones have emerged as a significant cohort, the committed core of religious people has not declined and in fact has become unified and increasingly battle tested. Protestants and Catholics alike know they’re up against an often hostile secular culture—and although a far smaller portion of the population, the same holds for Jews and Muslims as well.

These two trends—the rise of the Nones and the consolidation of the committed core of believers—have led to friction in public life. The Nones and religious Americans collide culturally and politically, not just theologically.

For a long time, the press has reported on the influence of religious voters, especially Evangelicals. Polling data shows that religiosity has become increasingly reliable as a predictor of political loyalties. But what’s far less commonly reported is that this goes both ways. In their recent book, American Grace: How Religion Divides and Unites Us, Robert Putnam and William Campbell focused on the practice of saying grace before meals as an indication of religious commitment and found a striking correlation. Seventy percent of those who never say grace before meals identify as Democrats, compared to slightly more than 20 percent who identify as Republicans. Nones are extremely ideological. Meanwhile, among those who say grace daily, 40 percent identify as Democrats and 50 percent as Republicans. Religious people are more diverse, but they trend to the political right, and the more religious they are the more likely they are to vote Republican.

Other data also suggests a growing divide between the irreligious and religious. A recent Pew study confirms that Nones are the single most ideologically committed cohort of white Americans, rivaled only by Evangelical Protestants. They overwhelmingly support abortion and gay marriage. Seventy-five percent of them voted for Barack Obama in 2008, and they played a decisive role in his victory in 2012. In Ohio, Obama lost the Protestant vote by three percent and the Catholic vote by eleven percent—and both numbers rise if we isolate Protestants and Catholics who say they go to church every week. But he won the Nones, who make up 12 percent of the electorate in Ohio, by an astounding 47 percent.

I think it’s fair to say that Obama ran a values campaign last fall that gambled that the Nones would cast the decisive votes. For the first time in American political history, the winning party deliberately attacked religion. Its national convention famously struck God from the platform, only to have it restored by anxious party leaders in a comical session characterized by the kind of frivolity that comes when people recognize that it doesn’t really matter. Democratic talking points included the ‘war on women’ and other well-crafted slogans that rallied their base, the Nones, who at 24 percent of all Democrat and Democratic-leaning voters have become the single largest identifiable cohort in the liberal coalition.

This presents the deepest threat to religious liberty today. It’s not good when the most numerous and powerful constituency in the Democratic Party has no time for religion. This is all the more true when its ideology has the effect of encouraging the rest of the party to view religion—especially Christianity—as the enemy; and when law professors provide reasons why the Constitution doesn’t protect religious people.

Religious Liberty Under the Gun

From the end of the Civil War until the 1960s, the wealthiest, best educated, and most powerful Americans remained largely loyal to Christianity. That’s changed. There were warning signs. William F. Buckley, Jr. chronicled how Yale in the early ’50s could no longer support even the bland religiosity of liberal Protestantism. Today, Yale and other elite institutions can be relied upon to provide anti-Christian propaganda. Stephen Pinker and Stephen Greenblatt at Harvard publish books that show how Christianity pretty much ruins everything, as Christopher Hitchens put it so bluntly. The major presses publish book after book by scholars like Elaine Pagels at Princeton, who argues that Christianity is for the most part an invention of power hungry bishops who suppressed the genuine diversity and spiritual richness of early followers of Jesus.

One can dispute the accuracy of the books, articles, and lectures of these and other authors. This is necessary, but unlikely to be effective. Experts savaged Greenblatt’s book on Lucretius, The Swerve, but it won the National Book Award for non-fiction. That’s not an accident. Greenblatt and others at elite universities are serving an important ideological purpose by using their academic authority to discredit Christianity, whose adherents are obstacles not only to abortion and gay rights, but to medical research unrestricted by moral concerns about the use of fetal tissue, to new reproductive technologies, to doctor-assisted suicide, and in general to liquefying traditional moral limits so that they can be reconstructed according to the desires of the Nones. Books by these elite academics reassure the Nones and their fellow travelers that they are not opposed to anything good or even respectable, but rather to historic forms of oppression, ignorance, and prejudice.

I cannot overstate the importance of these ideological attacks on Christianity. Our Constitution accords us rights, and the courts cannot void these rights willy-nilly. But history shows that the Constitution is a plastic document. When our elite culture thinks something is bad for society as a whole, judges find ways to suppress it. The First Amendment offered no protection to Bob Jones University, which lost its tax-exempt status because of a policy that prohibited inter-racial dating. As the Supreme Court majority in 1983 wrote in that case: ‘Government has a fundamental, overriding interest in eradicating racial discrimination in education . . . which substantially outweighs whatever burden denial of tax benefits places on [the University’s] exercise of their religious beliefs.’

In recent years the Supreme Court has been largely solicitous of religious freedom, sensing perhaps that our cultural conflicts over religion and morality need to be kept within bounds. But the law professors are preparing the way for changes. Martha Nussbaum, who teaches at the University of Chicago Law School, has opined that the colleges and universities run by Catholic religious orders that require their presidents or other leaders to be members of the order should lose their tax exempt status, because they discriminate against women. She allows that current interpretations of the First Amendment don’t support her view, but that’s not much comfort. All Nussbaum is doing is applying the logic of the Bob Jones case to the feminist project of eradicating discrimination based on sex.

Former Georgetown law professor Chai Feldblum—who is also a current Obama appointee to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission—has written about the coming conflicts between gay rights and religious liberty. With an admirable frankness she admits, ‘I’m having a hard time coming up with any case in which religious liberty should win.’ Again, the Bob Jones case is in the background, as are other aspects of civil rights law designed to stamp out racial discrimination. For someone like Feldblum, when religious individuals and institutions dont conform to the new consensus about sexual morality, their freedoms should be limited.

It is precisely the possibilities evoked by Nussbaum and Feldblum that now motivate the Obama administration’s intransigence about allowing places like Notre Dame to be classified as religious employers. In the Bob Jones case, the justices were very careful to stipulate that ‘churches or other purely religious institutions’ remain protected by the First Amendment’s principle of free exercise. By ‘accommodating’ rather than counting Notre Dame and other educational and charitable organizations as religious employers, secular liberalism can target them in the future, as they have done to Catholic adoption agencies that won’t place children with homosexual couples.

A recent book by University of Chicago professor of philosophy and law Brian Leiter outlines what I believe will become the theoretical consensus that does away with religious liberty in spirit if not in letter. ‘There is no principled reason,’ he writes, ‘for legal or constitutional regimes to single out religion for protection.’ Leiter describes religious belief as a uniquely bad combination of moral fervor and mental blindness, serving no public good that justifies special protection. More significantly—and this is Leiter’s main thesis—it is patently unfair to afford religion such protection. Why should a Catholic or a Baptist have a special right while Peter Singer, a committed utilitarian, does not? Evoking the principle of fairness, Leiter argues that everybody’s conscience should be accorded the same legal protections. Thus he proposes to replace religious liberty with a plenary ‘liberty of conscience.’

Leiter’s argument is libertarian. He wants to get the government out of the business of deciding whose conscience is worth protecting. This mentality seems to expand freedom, but that’s an illusion. In practice it will lead to diminished freedom, as is always the case with any thoroughgoing libertarianism.

Let me give an example. The urban high school my son attended strictly prohibits hats and headgear. It does so in order to keep gang-related symbols and regalia out of the school. However, the school recognizes a special right of religious freedom, and my son, whose mother is Jewish and who was raised as a Jew, was permitted to wear a yarmulke. Leiter’s argument prohibits this special right, but his alternative is unworkable. The gang members could claim that their deep commitments of loyalty to each other create a conscientious duty to wear gang regalia. If everybody’s conscience must be respected, then nobody’s will be, for order and safety must be preserved.

The Arabic word dhimmi means non-Muslim. Under Muslim rule, non-Muslims were allowed to survive only insofar as they accepted Muslim dominance. Our times are not those times, and the secularism of the Nones is not Islam. Nevertheless, I think many powerful forces in America would like to impose a soft but real dhimmitude. The liberal and libertarian Nones will quarrel, as do the Shi’a and Sunni, but they will, I think, largely unify against the public influence of religion.

What can be done to prevent them from succeeding?

First and most obvious—defend religious liberty in the courts. Although I have depicted deep cultural pressures that work against religious liberty, we live in a society governed by the rule of law. Precedent matters, and good lawyering can make a substantive difference.

Second—fight against the emerging legal theories that threaten to undermine religious liberty. This is a battle to be carried out in the law schools and among political theorists. For decades, legal activists on the Left have been subsidized by legal clinics and special programs run in law schools. Defenders of religious liberty need to push back.

Third—fight the cultural battle. Legal theory flexes and bends in accord with the dominant consensus. This Brian Leiter knows, which is why he does not much worry about the current state of constitutional law. He goes directly to the underlying issues, which concern the role of religion in public life.

We must meet the challenge by showing that religion is indeed special. Religious people are the most likely Americans to be involved in civic life, and the most generous in their charitable contributions. This needs to be highlighted again and again. Moreover, we need to draw a contrast with the Nones, who tend to outsource their civic responsibilities and charitable obligations to government in the form of expanded government programs and higher taxes.

There is another, deeper argument that must be made in defense of religion: It is the most secure guarantee of freedom. America’s Founders, some of them Christian and others not, agreed as a matter of principle that the law of God trumps the law of men. This has obvious political implications: The Declaration of Independence appeals to the unalienable rights given by our Creator that cannot be overridden or taken away. In this sense, religion is especially beneficial. As Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI both emphasized, it gives transcendent substance to the rights of man that limit government. Put somewhat differently, religion gives us a place to stand outside politics, and without it we’re vulnerable to a system in which the state defines everything, which is the essence of tyranny. This is why gay marriage, which is sold as an expansion of freedom, is in fact a profound threat to liberty.

Finally, we must not accept a mentality of dhimmitude. The church, synagogue, and mosque have a tremendous solidity born of a communion of wills fused together in obedience to God. This gives people of faith the ability to fight with white fury for what they perceive to be a divine cause, which is of course a great force for righteousness—but also a dangerous threat to social peace, as early modern Europe knew only too well.

In conclusion, I want to focus not on fury but on the remarkable capacity for communities of faith to endure. My wife’s ancestors lived for generations in the contested borderlands of Poland and Russia. As Jews they were tremendously vulnerable, and yet through their children and their children’s children they endured in spite of discrimination, violence, and attempted genocide. Where now, I ask, are the Russian and Polish aristocrats who dominated them for centuries? Where now is the Thousand Year Reich? Where now is the Soviet worker’s paradise? They have gone to dust. The Torah is still read in the synagogue.

The same holds for Christianity. The Church did not need constitutional protections in order to take root in a hostile pagan culture two thousand years ago.

Right now the Nones seem to have the upper hand in America. But what seems powerful is not always so. If I had to bet on Harvard or the Catholic Church, Yale or the Mennonites in Goshen, Indiana, the New York Times or yeshivas in Brooklyn, I wouldn’t hesitate. Over the long haul, religious faith has proven itself the most powerful and enduring force in human history.”

“Abortion provider Planned Parenthood is out for blood.

Being discredited time and time again hasn’t stopped taxpayer-funded Planned Parenthood from spending millions of dollars to elect pro-abortion candidates to Congress, the office of the President, and even as State Governors.

This year they have set their sights to destroy pro-life Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, who is running for Governor in this year’s election in Virginia.

Planned Parenthood has every reason to be concerned with Governor Ken Cuccinelli.

Ken has been unafraid of talking about his strong pro-life views.

Of course, he doesn’t just talk the talk, either.

1) He has worked tirelessly to restrict abortion in the Commonwealth of Virginia by fighting for regulations that would make abortion clinics adhere to the same rules as hospitals and other medical institutions.

2) He fought to provide anesthesia for unborn children being aborted, a bill that was rejected by abortion providers because they didn’t want to admit that these precious children being killed indeed feel pain.

3) He received endorsements from virtually every pro-life organization in Virginia, and elsewhere, as a testimony of his strong efforts on behalf of the unborn and their mothers.

But Ken’s record on life isn’t the only reason liberals hate him and will do everything they can to stop him. Ken’s strong pro-family stand has also earned him their ire.

4) In 2004, Cuccinelli dared to state publicly that ‘homosexuality is wrong.’

5) During his 2009 campaign for Virginia Attorney General, he stated: ‘My view is that homosexual acts, not homosexuality, but homosexual acts are wrong. They’re intrinsically wrong. And I think in a natural law based country it’s appropriate to have policies that reflect that. ... They don’t comport with natural law. I happen to think that it represents (to put it politely; I need my thesaurus to be polite) behavior that is not healthy to an individual and in aggregate is not healthy to society (Of course this is true! It would be aduhstatement if not for the aberrant power of the homosexual lobby!—my addition).’

6) He also fought Virginia colleges and universities to keep them from including ‘sexual orientation,’ ‘gender identity,’ and ‘gender expression’ as protected classes within their nondiscrimination policies (Good for him! No wonder he is disliked by the immoral set!—my addition).

Ken Cuccinelli has even taken a stand against the large tax increase that his own party put forward in the last few months.

It’s no wonder that virtually every liberal organization is targeting Ken this year.

And that is why I am supporting Ken so early - and hoping you will, too.

Each dollar we raise for Ken now will allow him to better defend himself from attacks by his opponent, Clinton-era crony and fundraiser, Terry McAuliffe, and every left-wing organization in the country.

Ken Cuccinelli is pro-life. Terry McAuliffe is in favor of abortion (MURDER of the unborn!—my addition).

Ken is pro-family and supports marriage between only a man and a woman. Terry McAuliffe has endorsed same-sex marriage publicly on numerous occasions.

Ken Cuccinelli was willing to criticize a tax increase by a Governor from his own party. Terry McAuliffe has praised that tax increase as the right thing to do.

Concerned Women PAC is endorsing Ken Cuccinelli because he isn’t just good for Virginia, he’s good for America.

“Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe opposes new rules the state has instituted to protect the health and safety of women injured by abortions and that opposition has earned him criticism from a women’s group.

Today, Women Speak Out Virginia, a connected PAC of the national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List, announced a $50,000 radio ad buy targeting him for his opposition to common ground abortion center health and safety standards.

Last year, the Virginia Health Commissioner reported to the Board of Health that more than 80 violations were discovered in abortion centers across the Commonwealth.

The ad will run on Adult and Soft Contemporary and Newstalk stations in the Northern Virginia, Richmond and Norfolk media markets for two weeks.

‘In light of Kermit Gosnell’s ‘house of horrors,’ it is an outrage that anyone who purports to care about women would oppose efforts to ensure that Virginia women are treated with basic dignity and respect. More than 80 violations have been discovered in Virginia abortion clinics including blood-stained equipment and operating tables, improper disposal of fetal remains, staff failure to properly sanitize instruments, and even doctors performing exams with unwashed hands,’ said Mallory Quigley, spokesperson for Women For Ken (Cuccinelli).

She added: ‘Despite evidence that these common ground health and safety standards are needed, Terry McAuliffe refuses to defect from his abortion industry allies, who have vigorously fought these pro-woman efforts from the beginning. The Women Speak Out Virginia PAC will be calling out Terry McAuliffe’s shameful opposition to protecting Virginia’s women until Election Day.’

Just this month Terry McAuliffe opposed basic health and safety standards for some women’s health clinics that perform abortions.

McAuliffe refuses to require women’s health clinics to provide the same sanitary environment we expect of dental offices and hospitals.

McAuliffe is bowing to the political pressure from powerful corporations that run women’s health clinics.'

Last month, McAuliffe’s campaign was asked by the Washington Post to confirm or deny his stance on abortion as being one of supporting ‘a platform of abortion on-demand at any time, for any reason, paid for by Virginia taxpayers,’ including ‘sex-selective abortion, late-term abortion, partial-birth abortion, and abortions on teenage girls without parental consent—all paid for by Virginia taxpayers.’ McAuliffe spokesman Josh Schwerin declined to comment to the Post (No denial!—my addition) .”

The debate is about a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as being between one man and one woman. The Amendment would have passed in the Senate if some RINO Republicans like John McCain had not voted against it. As a result, we now have the Supreme Court considering if homosexuals somehow have the “right” to have faux “marriage!”

When I read that President Obama refused to comment on the murder trial of abortion butcher Kermit Gosnell ‘because it’s an active trial,’ I knew immediately he wasn’t being truthful (i.e., he was lying again!—my addition).

In fact, the second I heard about Obama’s excuse for dodging the question, I tweeted that ongoing investigations or trials did not preclude his publicly weighing in on the Trayvon Martin case or on the case of his friend and Harvard professor Henry Gates, about which he said the Cambridge police had acted ‘stupidly.’

If there ever has been a case of tainting the jury pool, Obama’s public identification with Martin was it. So please spare us any pretense toward restraint in such matters.

Obama declined to comment on Gosnell for the same reason the liberal media have consciously blacked out the story.

When Obama was asked, he didn’t just beg off because ‘it’s an active trial’; he offered up the obligatory disingenuous liberal talking point: ‘I think President Clinton said it pretty well when he said abortion should be safe, legal and rare (I dont know about Bill Clinton but Hillary dropped the rare part before the end of the 2008 Presidential primary season!—my addition).’

This formulation has always bothered me because it is fundamentally dishonest (It also means the speaker believes the listener is an idiot!—my addition)—and particularly so in Obama’s case.

If an unborn baby is not a human life—an evil sophistry that has been responsible for millions of murders in this nation—then why in the world would it be important to make it rare (Exactly! While I was still living in Tucson, a newspaper editorialized that a woman who had a botched [the baby lived!] 3rd abortion should not be suing the doctor. The statement of the paper was that 2 abortions were OK but the third was too many and she should just accept the baby. In fact, either abortion is wrong or it is not. IF it is not wrong, what difference does it make if one has two, three, or ten? Baby MURDERERS can not even stay consistent in their advocacy oflegalizedMURDER!—my addition)? If we are just talking about clusters of cells, an unviable tissue mass, then why worry at all about reducing the practice?

The reason is that Clinton knew, as do all pro-abortion politicians, either that abortion is sinister or that a significant majority of voters believe it, so proponents have to at least pretend to be sensitive to it. They must make it appear as if they are trying to take steps to reduce the practice, even as they do so many things to encourage it (Which is exactly what then candidate Obama CLAIMED he would do if elected in 2008. He LIED then, he continues to LIE!—my addition).

Make it rare? It bears repeating that Obama strongly opposed the Illinois Born Alive Infants Protection Act, which would have required doctors to assist babies born as a result of a failed abortion. How about his opposition to a bill that would have prevented partial-birth abortion?

If Obama wanted to make abortion rare, would he be such a strong supporter of Planned Parenthood and its notorious abortion industry? No one could be more in bed with that organization than Obama, who is planning on attending the organization’s fundraising gala this coming Thursday.

Obama and the pro-abortion left don’t want to call attention to the grisly practices of Gosnell for a number of reasons. You can disguise the practice of abortion with euphemisms, such as ‘they snipped the baby’s spinal cord,’ but in the end, we are talking about the intentional killing (MURDER—my addition) of human life, and it follows that a facility (And the people who work there!—my addition) so morally corrupt as to routinely engage in that despicable practice might not dot and cross all its other ethical ‘i’s’ and ‘t’s’ (Might not? Probably will not!—my addition).

If Obama or the leftist media were to shine a disinfecting light on the Gosnell trial, it might lead to a public discussion on abortion and an inquiry into how widespread such abuses are. The less attention the left permits to be drawn to this the better.

But there are additional sinister reasons Obama and his liberal media cohorts have suppressed the news on this story, knowing as they do just how horrendous Gosnell’s clinic was.

The pro-abortion left ridicules and condemns Second Amendment advocates for being paranoid purists in opposing all restrictions on gun rights, but in the purist and paranoia categories, they make gun advocates look like pikers (My use of red. And in their case, rightfully so. For they know that if the general public ever wakes up and accepts the fact that a baby is being MURDERED, the MURDERS would end! The public has to be kept in the dark. Thus, the use of such terms as fetus, clump of cells, womens health! They know what pro-life people knowevery abortion IS MURDER—my addition).

Abortion is the left’s holy grail; it is liberals’ sacred ritual, about which nothing negative may be uttered for fear that it might lead to even the slightest infringement on it. Likewise, the abortion lobby simply will not countenance any restriction on abortion or any negative light to be cast on any abortion practice or clinic for fear that it could lead to a slippery slope whereby abortion might actually become significantly rarer. That would be a big setback for the lucrative abortion industry and for the campaign blood money it generates for supporting politicians (Follow the money!—my addition).

Obama and the pro-abortion left definitely want abortion to be legal, but they sure don’t want it to be safe for the baby or rare. To suggest otherwise is being dishonest or willfully blind (Or lying!—my addition).
