“Will GOD Always Bless America?
Judges 2: 7-10
“Warmest greetings to you friend! I’m Mack Lyon. The program’s ‘In Search of the Lord’s Way.’ You’ve been reminded many times I’m sure that yesterday, being September 11th that it was the 9th anniversary of the deadliest attack ever by enemy forces on our homeland. Well, God has been good to America and blessed us richly, hasn’t He? That’s the premise of our study today. Stay tuned.
Welcome friend, to our Bible study program In Search of the Lord’s Way to become a Christian and to live like one. Say, it’s good to have you with us! I pray we’ll both be blessed. A few years ago (well, it was before the manufacturers started putting the GPS systems in their new vehicles) I bought one. You know what? That thing really works! It really does tell you how to get to where you would like to go. And it’s accurate, too! When you get it programmed right it is, that lady knows about the way to about everywhere—except heaven, of course. It’s amazing how she knows. I had to learn to trust her, though. My wife, Lois, had to rebuke me a few times about my distrust, but, I’ve learned and I can trust my GPS.
Well, from what I’m seeing and hearing on television and radio, that’s the way some folks are about the Bible. Even some preachers read verses like, well, like Mark 16: 16 for example in which Jesus said, ‘He who believes and is baptized will be saved.’ And, for some unexplainable reason, they just cannot bring themselves to believe that and to teach it and to practice it. When they’re asked about it, their usual reply is ‘Well yeah, but don’t forget that Jesus also said in John 3: 16 ‘ ... whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.’ It’s kind of like my GPS saying, ‘Approaching right turn in point five miles, followed by a left turn.’ It took me awhile to take the left turn immediately following the right turn, but I learned to believe it and to do it. And that’s what we mean when we say we are ‘In Search of the Lord’s Way’ to believe and to do it.
If you’re a regular viewer you know, but if you are new to this program, you may not know we’re sponsored on this station by some churches of Christ right here in the area served by this station. And they are the reason that we never solicit our radio or TV audiences for money. Isn’t that great? It’s the Lord’s way, friend. Those churches and we also, would like to invite you to worship with them very soon. If you need help locating one of these congregations near you, we would love to be that kind of help. Otherwise we’ll keep your correspondence absolutely confidential. Our address is ‘In Search of the Lord’s Way,’ P.O Box 371, Edmond, OK 73083. By e-mail it’s searchtv@searchtv.org. Our toll-free telephone number is 1 (800) 321-8633 . You may access today’s message at http://www.searchtv.org/. Ken Helterbrand has been in charge of our music for almost 30 years, now. We love him. He’ll lead us now, then I’ll be back and we’ll read together Judges chapter 2, verses 7 through 10.
We’re reading from the book of Judges chapter 2, beginning at verse 7. ‘So the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord which He had done for Israel. Now Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died when he was one hundred and ten years old. And they buried him within the border of his inheritance at Timnath Heres, in the mountains of Ephraim, on the north side of Mount Gaash. When all the generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel.’ Now let us go to God in prayer. Holy Father, we approach You today in behalf of our great nation. We are so blessed by You in the beginning of our nation and the prosperity which we have enjoyed. We have become comfortable here and we have become lax in our morals and in our teachings and in our beliefs about You. And we pray You, Father, for forgiveness and help us as people in America, not as a chosen people as Americans but as Your chosen people as Christians, and that You bless America, our homeland and continue to do so. We pray You in Jesus’ name. Amen!
When God called Abram out of his homeland and from his kindred, He promised the old patriarch He would bless him and give him the land of Canaan and make of him a ‘great nation.’ (Genesis 12: 1 to 3) According to Genesis chapter 26, verses 1 to 5 He renewed that promise to Abram’s son, Isaac. And He renewed it again to his grandson Jacob, whom He renamed Israel in Genesis 28, verses 10 to 22. Thus the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, became God’s ‘chosen people’ of that period of time. They were the chosen people through whom God would bring the Savior into the world. Therefore, Christ was ultimately the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham that ‘in you all the nations of the earth will be blessed.’
In this, the Christian age, Christians are said to be ‘God’s chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but now are the people of God.’ (1 Peter chapter 2, verses 9 and 10) Therefore, as proud as we are to be Americans, America is not God’s chosen people. It’s the church today.
Our ‘founding fathers’ believed very strongly though that God rules in the kingdoms of men just as the Scripture says in 2 Chronicles chapter 21, verse 6 and elsewhere in the Bible as well. Therefore, they firmly believed that settling this land and founding the American Republic was the will and the work of Almighty God. There were fifty-six men who signed the Declaration of Independence. In the last paragraph of that document they said, ‘With a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, our sacred honor.’ Five of them were captured by the British. Twelve of them had their homes looted, and occupied by the enemy or burned. Two of them lost their sons in the battle with the British. One of them had two sons captured. Nine of them died from hardship—or were shot in the war for freedom. Well, someone, commenting on that said, ‘To be born free is a privilege. To die free is an awesome responsibility.’ But, will God always bless America as He has?
As we read in the preceding verses a while ago, Israel’s leader said to them, ‘The Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, that flow out of the valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of oil and honey; a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing; a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills you can dig copper. (Sounds like America, doesn’t it? But let’s continue: Moses was saying to Israel,) When you have eaten all and are full, then you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you.’ So, under the leadership of Joshua, the children of Israel occupied that land and became the world’s super power of their day.
Then, ‘Joshua died!’ (Joshua 24: 29) ‘Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had known the works of the Lord, which He had done for Israel.’ (Joshua 24: 31) The book of Judges takes up the story with Joshua’s burial and records another 400 year period of Israel’s history. It says, ‘When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them that did not know the Lord nor the works which He had done for Israel. Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals; and forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed other gods among the gods of the people who were all around them and they bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger. They forsook the Lord and served Baal (the Canaanite God) and the Ashtoreth (that is the Canaanite goddesses). And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel. So He delivered them into the hands of plunderers who despoiled them (meaning they deprived them of all their belongings) and He (I mean God) sold them into the hands of their enemies….’ (Judges 2: 1 to 14) The book of Judges records seven instances. Friend, when any nation including America turns against God, He will not keep on blessing them, and that nation will go into oblivion! Yes, ‘God will still be in control,’ as we’re hearing it lethargically said nowadays, but He will not keep on blessing that nation.
My friend, every generation of adult Americans has witnessed our national behavior, and seen it pitched on a downward, or an immoral, scale and very rapidly growing worse and worse. Of course that’s what the Bible says it would be. God says, ‘Evil men and imposters will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.’ (2 Timothy chapter 3, verse 13) Behavior must be controlled by a conviction of what’s right and what’s wrong, not by our personal opinions or our personal feelings about things! Only God can create unanimity of conviction. In his farewell speech as the first President of the United States, George Washington said, ‘Reason and Experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in the exclusion of religious principle.’
God says in Proverbs 14: 34, ‘Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach (or a disgrace) to any people.’ God is ‘holy’—meaning absolutely and perfectly moral. In 1 John chapter 1, verse 5 He is said to be ‘light.’ It follows, therefore, that in His absence immorality, that is sin is deep, deep darkness! Belief in God! Yes! I’m talking about God; I mean the God of the Bible, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Father of mankind—not Allah, or any other than the ‘Almighty God,’ the one and only God. He is the foundation on which we or any nation can build and maintain a moral society. When a nation turns against God, it plunges itself into moral darkness because ‘God is light.’ When we omit the mention of God in our ‘Pledge of Allegiance,’ when we remove ‘In God we trust’ from our currency, when we’re forbidden to mention God in the education of our children, or when we forbid the mention of God in such groups as Boy Scouts or YMCA, we’re declaring our independence from God and plunging our country into the moral darkness of immorality! We cannot hope for, or expect God to continue blessing a nation who does that!
I don’t know anything about the religion of Senator Byrd who died recently. He was from West Virginia. He’s on record as having said, ‘To remove God from this country is to destroy it.’ Oh, that’s so true. I agree! Yes, my friend, I agree with him! We simply must put a stop to this ‘social’ foolishness! Only ones who can do it are believers in God, not ‘a god’ but God. The Bible is the word of God and it says, ‘Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.’ (Psalm 33 and 12)’ In 1892 The Supreme Court of the United States in the case of ‘The Church of the Holy Trinity vs. the United States,’ the Supreme Court said, ‘This is a Christian nation.’ And so it is, friend! Let no one deny it. Oh, I don’t mean all of the early settlers were Christians. No, no, no! But, they believed in the deity of Jesus Christ.
For example, the first English colony in America was established in Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. It was, therefore, predominantly a Church of England. Maryland was founded by Lord Baltimore, a Catholic, but later became Church of England. Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire were settled by the Puritans, so they were Congregationalists. Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams, a dissident Puritan. He became a Baptist and established the first Baptist church in America. New Netherlands, which later came to be New York, it was settled by the Dutch, and the Dutch Reformed Church became the state religion. Pennsylvania was settled by William Penn and the Quakers. Well, they all believed in and preached Jesus Christ as the Son of God. And God has blessed America, don’t you agree? Let us pray. Holy Father, we give You our thanks now for all the blessings You have granted us. And, Father, listen to us as we pray for our country today that we will repent and come back to You ere it’s too late. In Jesus’ name, we ask it. Amen!
I’m going to read now a long passage from God’s word, Romans chapter 1, verses 18 through 32 in the New King James version, God’s own description of a people who refuse to have Him in their knowledge. It’s a long reading, but, please listen while I read it, will you? ‘For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the world in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal Godhead and power, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were they thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image of the corruptible man—and birds and four-footed beasts and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up to uncleanness, in their lusts in their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped, and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use of what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty for their error which was due. Even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but they also practice them.’
These are the words of God, and they need no comment. Will God always bless America?
