Abortion: 40 Years of Roe v. Wade, Doe v. Bolton and the Women and Families Impacted by an Unconstitutional Court Decision

“On Death Roe
Abortion may have taken 55 million lives since Roe v. Wade, but it’s created at least 110 million victims. Every one of those children had a mother—and not one of them was ever the same again. Some doctors would like us to believe that taking the life of an unborn child is just a simple, outpatient procedure. But lost somewhere in the pro-choice picket lines and political debates are the deeply personal stories of women trying to cope.
Yesterday, FRC helped facilitate an event on Capitol Hill where leaders listened to the heartbreaking stories of mothers who are trying to spare other women the same pain. What may surprise you is that the grief of abortion doesn’t take sides. It haunts women on every point of the political spectrum. Irene Beltran was six months along when she decided to end her pregnancy. ‘When the abortionists administered the [saline] into my stomach, I was mortified and shocked because I felt my child kick and turn hastily (my use of red—my addition),’ Beltran said wistfully. ‘Later, I found out she was being burned and could feel the pain.’
Irene was so devastated that she and her family desperately tried to save the baby. Instead of going back to the abortion clinic the next day to finish the procedure, she raced to the hospital—where her daughter died. ‘We spent the last moments with her,’ Beltran said.

‘Then the nurse ... carried her small, helpless, now cold, lifeless body out of the room.’
Others, like Kelly Stauffer, talked about being young and scared. ‘I can still, 17 years later, vividly remember the five-day process of being slowly and painfully dilated, of laying on an examination table and feeling the [five-month old] baby inside me frantically demand my attention right before the abortion’s needle ended her life.’

this ‘freedom.’ But for Stauffer and millions like her, it is a life sentence of regret. Yesterday’s event, which was hosted by Representatives Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.), Chris Smith (R-N.J.), and Diane Black (R-Tenn.) on Roe v. Wade’s 40th anniversary, helped to kick off a solemn day of floor speeches and press conferences. ‘Those gathered this Friday and those gathered on the House floor this afternoon are joined because we believe that life must be protected—and must be protected especially for those who have no ability to protect it themselves,’ said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), one of more than 15 members to speak during the special order.
Congressman Chris Smith, who has made protecting the unborn his life’s work, insisted that pro-lifers are ‘not only on the side of compassion, justice, and inclusion; we are on the right side of history. Future generations will look back on America and wonder how and why such a seemingly enlightened society—so blessed and endowed with education, advanced science, information, wealth and opportunity—could have failed to protect the innocent ... They will wonder how and why a Nobel Peace Prize-winning President could have been the abortion President.’

like this one. It was the brainchild of the Center for Reproductive Rights, a group that based on this video, the word ‘radical’ doesn’t begin to describe. The commercial features True Blood actor Mehcad Brooks holding roses and drinks in front of a roaring fire. At the end of a two-minute come-on, Mehcad looks at the camera and says, ‘Happy anniversary, baby. Lookin’ good for 40. Mmm, mmm, mmmmm.’
Maybe the folks at CRR think it’s funny to sexualize Roe’s legacy with all the class of an SNL Ladies’ Man skit, but in the end, all they did was prove pro-lifers’ point: that the abortion industry is not only intrinsically evil but fundamentally uncaring. The Left may be seduced by abortion’s appeal, but, as Live Action’s Cassy Fiano points out, it’s not exactly sexy to have an ad featuring a man who looks like he wants to take you to bed and then drop you off at the nearest Planned Parenthood. This smooth, but ultimately predatory tone, is what abortion is all about: Giving men what they want (with no consequences for them) while women are left to suffer and die. Even more repulsive, the Center intentionally uses an African American man to romanticize a procedure that happens to be the number one killer (MURDERER—my addition) of the black community.
‘How convenient,’ said Linda Shrewberry of Black Americans for Life, that women ‘pose their compliance with destroying their offspring as their ‘choice’ and their ‘right.’ For Planned Parenthood, mission accomplished—30% of all abortions are performed on black women and children.’ How sad that the black community isn’t storming the gates over the holocaust in their community—and over this ad. How sad that the black and white (or any other) church isn’t as well. How sad that all fathers in America are not taking action to protect their daughters. Happy anniversary, indeed.
** There’s been a lot of buzz about the NBC/Wall Street Journal polling on abortion this week. FRC’s Anna Higgins breaks down the numbers to explain ‘What the Polls Really Show about Roe v. Wade.’

*** There are lots of reality shows, but not many of them can save lives. ‘Surrender The Secret’ hopes to change that. The program follows five women who tell their stories about having abortions in their past, and take a healing journey together. You can watch the 10-episode premiere by clicking here
