Homosexuality and JESUS—the SON of GOD

Some people claim that JESUS said nothing about homosexual behavior and HIS silence is synonymous with HIS approval of such acts. Nothing could be farther from the truth. However, it is true that little is recorded in the gospels concerning HIS pronouncements in this area. This also is understandable.

The major focus of the gospels is that of establishing the fact that JESUS is the SON of GOD, the MESSIAH—the CHRIST—and that JESUS is the only path to obtaining salvation and eternal life. John wrote in John 20: 30-31 (NIV), “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” Nevertheless, some pertinent statements from JESUS are recorded and need to be identified as important in understanding what the Bible says about homosexuality.

First, JESUS makes reference to Sodom and Gomorrah. “‘Whatever town or village you enter, search for some worthy person there and stay at his house until you leave. As you enter the home, give it your greeting. If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.’” Matthew 10: 11-16 (NIV)

“Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. ‘Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.’” Matthew 11: 20-24 (NIV)

Luke repeats the comments of Matthew in his book concerning sending out the disciples of Jesus in Luke Chapter 10: 8-12 (NIV), “‘When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God is near you.’ But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.’ I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.’” (Luke does not include the statement about sending them as sheep among wolves or about being shrewd. Luke then continues with the woes given in Matthew quoted above but stops at “go down to the depths.” Luke does not include “‘If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.’”)

However, Luke does include material that was not given by the other gospels in relation to Sodom. “‘Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day
Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.’” Luke 17: 26-29 (NIV) (The book of Matthew also carries an account of these comments given by Jesus but leaves out “‘It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.’”)

Both Matthew and Luke cite instances when JESUS makes reference to Sodom. Matthew gives two accounts leaving out one mentioned by Luke. Luke gives two accounts leaving out one mentioned by Matthew. Both Matthew and Luke make reference to one particular
account. In all, three instances of JESUS making reference to Sodom are recorded.

JESUS in making reference to Sodom used an illustration that all Israelites who were knowledgeable about the Old Testament would recognize and understand. All knowledgeable Israelites knew that Sodom was destroyed by GOD for its grievous SIN including homosexuality and that Sodom was an example given by GOD of the wickedness of man.

JESUS by these three references to Sodom verifies that the account in the Old Testament is a true and accurate account of an historical event. JESUS in John 18: 37 (NIV) said in response to a question from Pilate that HE had come into the world to testify to the truth, “‘You are a king, then!’ said Pilate.

Jesus answered, ‘You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.’”

JESUS the SON of GOD testifies to the truth. By referring to Sodom he must be referring to a true event or he could not be testifying to the truth. Either the record of the destruction of Sodom for SIN including homosexuality is a true account or Jesus is a liar and is therefore not the SON of GOD. In fact, JESUS states emphatically in Matthew 10: 15 (NIV) that He is telling them the truth when he says, “’it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.’” It’s that important to accepting JESUS as GOD’S SON. GOD’S SON testifies to the truth.

Testifying to the account of Sodom is testifying that it was a true, historical event. Testifying to the account of Sodom is testifying that GOD punished the inhabitants of the town for their grievous SIN including homosexuality. Testifying to the destruction of Sodom for SIN is testifying to the fact that homosexuality is a SIN to GOD. It can’t be anything else. If it is, then GOD was unjust in destroying Sodom. GOD can not be unjust.

“‘It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.’” Matthew 5: 31-32 (NIV)

“When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.

Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?’

‘Haven’t you read,’ he replied, ‘that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.’

‘Why then,’ they asked, ‘did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?’

Jesus replied, ‘Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.’” Matthew 19: 1-9 (NIV)

“Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.

Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?’

‘What did Moses command you?’ he replied.

They said, ‘Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.’

‘It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law,’ Jesus replied. ‘But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.’

When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. He answered, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.’” Mark 10: 1-12 (NIV)

“‘The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it. It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of
the Law.

Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.’” Luke 16: 16-18 (NIV)

Matthew, Mark, and Luke all quote JESUS declaring the relationship to marriage and divorce. In each instance, JESUS refers to marriage as being between a man and a woman. HE even quotes Genesis 2: 24 concerning a man leaving his father and mother to become one flesh with his wife. Nowhere does HE sanction any other type of union. If the SON of GOD accepts only a union between a man and a woman and no other forms or variations, then we certainly do not have the right or the ability to do so. GOD made man and woman and therefore only GOD may decide how they will be united. It is extreme arrogance to believe that we know better than GOD.
