For the past quarter, we have been studying the book of Mark in the New Testament where I worship on Sunday. We were suppose to finish it last Sunday. However, as normally happens, we weren’t able to. We basically finished through chapter twelve. Which leads to tonight’s post. One of the passages considered was Mark, chapter 12, verses 18 through 27. The passage reads as follows from the NIV:
“Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection came to him (JESUS—my addition) with a question. ‘Teacher,’ they said, ‘Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and have children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?’
Jesus replied, ‘Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!’”
I tend to be impatient. While we were discussing the passage and before the teacher could bring the following up, I said that Jesus’ statement about the Sadducees of “you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God” was a slap in the face to them. They were identified as not knowing Scripture by a “common” person who was not part of the ruling religious class! They were identified as not knowing the power of GOD by a “common” person who was not part of the ruling religious class!
Thinking about this passage later in the day, the parallel to today’s political scene seems obvious. The Tea Party movement, the 9/12 movement, and similar groups are slapping the face of the political elite of the nation! They are saying to the Congress of the United States—Democrats in particular, to the many members of the federal court system including several (4 or 5 members in particular) Justices of the Supreme Court, and to the President of the United States: “You don’t know the Constitution of the United States of America or the power of the people!”
What a slap in the face! No wonder they are despised by the ruling elite! No wonder that so many are trying to discredit them! No wonder that many Democrats fear the upcoming General Election. Their authority and ruling status is being challenged by common folks who are fed up with the establishment! The ruling political elite are the Sadducees of the modern political era!
