This was not my planned post for today. As I’ve said, I’m trying to clean out my mailbox. It is from March but so good that I wanted to post it immediately. Enjoy! Or, worry!!!

OnStar, of course, is a GM product. Wait a second. Didn’t the Obama Administration take majority control of GM. Government Motors is invading privacy? Really!!! Hard to believe!!!
The 2010-2011 federal government’s fiscal year budget ends Friday, September 30th, at midnight. What are the provisions of the 2011-2012 federal government’s fiscal year budget? NO ONE KNOWS!!! The Republican controlled House of Representatives passed a fiscal year 2011-2012 budget last spring. The Democratic controlled Senate rejected that proposed budget. The Democratic controlled Senate also rejected the proposed budget of the President. Incredibly, or not; the Democratic control Senate with less than a week before the new fiscal year, HAS NOT PROPOSED ANY TYPE OF REPLACEMENT BUDGET OR ANY TYPE OF BUDGET!!! HOW FISCALLY IRRESPONSIBLE IS THE DEMOCRATIC CONTROLLED SENATE!!! Besides spending more and more money, WHAT HAS THE DEMOCRATIC CONTROLLED SENATE DONE THIS YEAR!!! THE NEXT ELECTION FOR 23 DEMOCRAT SENATORS IS 2012!!! WE NEED TO VOTE THESE IRRESPONSIBLE SENATORS OUT OF OFFICE!!!!!!!

Fifty-Four Years of Math 1957 - 2011 In America
Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2.00, and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her.
She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. Why do I tell you this?
Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:
1. Teaching Math In 1950s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit? (What is profit? Isn‘t that when greedy businessmen steal the wealth of workers???—my addition)
2. Teaching Math In 1960s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?
3. Teaching Math In 1970s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?
4. Teaching Math In 1980s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.
5. Teaching Math In 1990s
A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it’s ok.)
6. Teaching Math In 2000s
If you have special needs or just feel you need assistance because of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, childhood memories, criminal background, then don’t answer and the correct answer will be provided for you. There are no wrong answers.
(This is a true story: I took a summer government class at a junior college located in Tucson. It wasn’t identified as such but it was actually designed to meet the State requirement of passing the Constitution for college students who were to become teachers. Most of the students were from the University of Arizona taking it at the junior college because it was easier than at the UofA.
The instructor said he was a retired professor who had taught at the UofA for a number of years. He also said that he had only flunked one student in all his teaching years at the University. Each test had a take-home essay question worth 20 points out of 100 points for the test.
The day after our tests were returned, a woman who sat next to me asked me to read her essay. The question was to explain the concept of judicial review. I read her answer, looked at her, and said: “You don’t have a clue about what judicial review is, do you?”
Her one word response was “No.” Her score for her answer to the essay question: all 20 points!!! American education at its finest!!!—my addition)

Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! Unfortunately, there is a lot of truth in the above. If you have a chance, read “High School Confidential: Secrets of an Undercover Student” by Jeremy Iversen, © 2006. It is suppose to be a true, composite account of an adult who went undercover as a student at a California High School to find out want happens at a “typical” California high school. If true, disturbing!!! It was nothing like my high school experience.
“And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” (Last sentence of the Declaration of Independence)
