Illinois General Assembly update: On my update yesterday, I wrote “SB 1716 was NOT voted on and probably will not be voted on this year.” That might be incorrect. There is still a chance it could be voted on this year. The latest update: “5/31/2009, House, Final Action Deadline Extended-9(b) November 30, 2009.” This section replaced the “5/31/2009, House, Rule 19(a) / Re-referred to Rules Committee” statement that was updated yesterday. The reference to the Rules Committee is no longer listed as an action.
This bill just keeps popping up—they seem determined to cram this abominable legislation down the throats of the people of this State. I will continue to WATCH and will report any change and the irresponsible legislators who are supporting this. They can’t pass a balanced budget but they want to allow “civil unions” for sinful behavior. The immoral Chicago CABAL is still tirelessly working! WHAT ARE THEIR PRIORITIES?
I received the following by e-mail Wednesday morning and am posting it without change except for putting it into my format. The e-mail:
“IFI Update: Legislative Session Wrap-Up—June 2009
by David E. Smith, Executive Director—Illinois Family Institute
As the month of May came to a close, so did the regular session of the Illinois General Assembly. While the state budget has still not been finalized, lawmakers did not have the political will to raise our taxes. They will have to go back to Springfield this summer to hammer out the budget.
You can find a summary of the complete list of bills we monitored by clicking HERE.
Perhaps the best news is, despite the intense media push suggesting that it was imminent, the Civil Union bill—SB 1716 (formerly HB 2234) failed to pass during the regular session. Yet I want to remind you that gay activists are already regrouping and planning to make another push to pass this bill in the Veto Session in November. Equality Illinois and the ACLU hired a number of high profile lobbyists, some from a powerful Chicago law firm. We expect another ‘full court press’ in the future.
Your calls, emails and letters worked!!! We’ve heard from a number of House secretaries that the highest number of calls to their offices were coming in against the income tax increase proposal and the civil union bill.
Rest assured, IFI will continue to work to educate key lawmakers on why they should oppose same-sex ‘marriage’ under the name ‘civil unions.’
Please don’t forget about our financial needs over the summer. This is a good time to remind you that IFI depends on donations from involved, caring people like you to keep our ministry running. As we head into the summer season—keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Please financially support IFI’s efforts to defend families in Illinois from anti-family policies and laws. As for the Medical Marijuana bill (SB 1381), this bill barely got out of the Illinois Senate last week by just the 30 votes it needed to pass, but was not called in the Illinois House because they did not have enough support. This too is on our radar screen for the Veto Session. (I have not written about this bill but I have been watching it. It too had the final action deadline extended: “5/31/2009, House, Final Action Deadline Extended-9(b) November 30, 2009.”—my addition)
Even though Speaker Michael Madigan issued a statement saying that ‘that gambling is not a wholesome activity, and we’re not going to deal with that this year’—two big gambling bills did pass both houses and are on Governor Patrick Quinn’s desk. He is the only one who can now stop these bills—which amount to the greatest expansion of gambling in Illinois history.
ACTION: Contact Governor Quinn (800-664-3112) and tell him to keep his promise to the voters and to veto SB 1298 and [veto—my addition] video poker and Internet Lottery out of HB 255.
Tell the Governor not to let his future and legacy be defined by bringing gambling into homes and communities through Internet gambling and Video Poker/slot machines.
