Illinois judges—my position on three

1) I reside in the Tenth Judicial District where there are two open positions. One does not have a contest. The other has Democrat Christopher Spanos running against Republican John Vespa. I was at a meeting where both were invited. Mr. Spanos did not attend. I’m supporting John Vespa for the Tenth Judicial District.

John Vespa supported.

Retention elections:

The other two court positions are retention elections. The judge has served at least one term in office and is seeking to be kept in office. This is a yes or no vote for that specific judge for that specific position. No other name is on the ballot. In Illinois the judge must receive a 60% yes vote. If not, an election is held to fill the position.

I know of no time when a judge has not been retained. The problem is that most voters have no knowledge of whether or not a particular judge is good or bad or somewhere in between so they tend to vote yes. I tend to vote no. I want to help to get a bad judge out of office. This year, there is more knowledge than normal about the two judges.

2) Third Appellate Judicial District: Mary McDade is seeking retention.

She is notorious for lowering the sentence of convicted felonies. In one case, a student took a gun to school in Peoria and fired it at students while within the school. He was convicted and sentenced to ten years. In a two to one decision, she voted to reduce the sentence to months.

Mary McDade—I’m voting NO!

3) Third District Illinois Supreme Court: Tom Kilbride is seeking retention

Tom Kilbride is supposedly spending millions to retain his position. And he needs to do so because there is organized opposition to his retention. One very important reason is that he was the 4th (7 members on the Supreme Court of Illinois) and decisive vote to rule that a General Assembly law to restrict the money awards in medical cases was unconstitutional. The rational was that the law violated the separation of powers clause of the State constitution. I have read the appropriate sections of the State constitution and, in my opinion, that’s a nonsensical decision but typical of lawyers.

I know of two websites that are involved in the opposition. They are:

and

Tom Kilbride is also supported by the Lesbian and Gay Bar Association of Chicago.
