“This Easter, Remember the Power of One Life
April 4, 2015

Every Easter morning, my family likes to attend the sunrise service at the Lincoln Memorial. Until recently I did not realize a special significance of that tradition: President Abraham Lincoln was shot on Good Friday, in April 1865. He died the next day and, in shock and horror, Americans awoke that Sunday morning and mourned a great man. They called it ‘Black Easter.’ On a holy day that usually is a celebration of new life and of the Risen Lord Jesus Christ, the nation mourned a singular death.

The man who led the mourning was The Reverend Phineas Gurley, pastor of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church. The church still stands today, its steeple pointing to heaven just blocks from the White House. After Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865, Dr. Gurley was called to Lincoln’s side as the President lingered near death from the wound. Later, Dr. Gurley delivered the funeral sermon for the state event, as well as the private service, for those closest to the President.

In his public remarks, reported in the New York Times, Dr. Gurley remembered a great man: ‘Probably no man since the days of Washington was ever so deeply and firmly embedded and enshrined in the very hearts of the people as Abraham Lincoln. Nor was it a mistaken confidence and love. He deserved it well—deserved it all. Always and everywhere he aimed and endeavored to be right and to do right.’

The pastor spoke in painful and hopeful language about the President lost:

‘He is dead; but the God in whom he trusted lives, and He can guide and strengthen his successor, as He guided and strengthened him. He is dead; but the memory of his virtues, of his wise and patriotic counsels and labors, of his calm and steady faith in God lives, is precious, and will be a power for good in the country quite down to the end of time. He is dead; but the cause he so ardently loved, so ably, patiently, faithfully represented and defended—not for himself only, not for us only, but for all people in all their coming generations, till time shall be no more—that cause survives his fall, and will survive it.’

President Lincoln paid the ultimate price for his commitment to the transcendent ideal that every human being should be treated as a person.

And his cause did indeed survive his fall. While a nation mourned his death on Easter, in the days that followed, his life inspired his countrymen to fight to preserve, not only the union, but to protect a future for every person, no matter their creed or color. While that dark April the nation commemorated Black Easter, by Christmas of that year, the Thirteenth Amendment, formally abolishing slavery in the United States of America, had been ratified.

Easter reminds us of the power of one life. Today we fight in the historic tradition of Lincoln for the same ideal: that every human being is a person. As the sun rises over the Reflecting Pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial this Sunday, may we all be inspired and renewed in our faith and hope that one day every person will be welcomed in life and protected in law.”
