Tax Increase Protest Day—May 19, 2009

Friday I received two time sensitive e-mails about upcoming events. I have not checked the links to tonight’s post but am posting it tonight because the event is Tuesday. This is an Illinois event dealing with a protest over a proposed increase in the income tax by 50% and possible increases in other taxes. I am posting the e-mail tonight for your consideration without endorsement but with some comments. I have also put it into my format. Monday morning I plan to post the second e-mail which is for a Friday event for Chicago, Illinois. Then, I plan to return to my series on “hate crimes.” I did some research Friday night and have more information. Tonight’s e-mail:

“Call to ACTION! Have your voice heard!

The Illinois chapter of Americans for Prosperity is calling upon our over 20,000 statewide members to participate in the May 19th Don’t Tax Me Quinn rally at the Capitol in Springfield, Illinois.

What: ‘Don’t Tax Me, Quinn!’ rally at the Capitol
Date: Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Time: 1:00 PM-2:00 PM (ET of closure)

Place: East side of the Illinois State Capitol (on the grounds of the Lincoln statue)

Why: To oppose the proposed tax and fee hikes in Illinois—the legislature will be in session on this date and they are currently working on the budget.
Who: Taxpayers from across Illinois and, hopefully, you!

Can’t make it to Springfield on the19th? Then click here and have your voice heard. Tell your IL legislator, "No new taxes!"

Did you know that Illinois taxpayers have to work more than half the year to pay for our governments? (I think this is a generalization and not true in every case. Nor do I know if the generalization is true. I do know that Cook County, where Chicago is located, is supposed to have the highest sales tax in the country—my addition.)

Did you know over the last five years, Illinois taxpayers have provided the State of Illinois almost $7 billion in new revenue growth? Yet we have a $9 billion budget deficit! (Higher than that according to some authorities—my addition.)

Did you know Illinois is one of only seven states with fewer jobs today than it had 10 years ago? The state’s unemployment rate has increased to the highest point in 17 years at 8.6%! (I believe the latest figures had the national average at 8.9%—my addition.)

Amazingly, our Governor and (some of—my addition) our lawmakers want to sock it to us again with a 50% income tax increase—the largest major tax increase in Illinois history. (Even worse, in my opinion, according to today’s newspaper, some want to pay for a capital improvement program, in part, by increasing gambling—ALWAYS a bad idea!—my addition) That’s $4 Billion in new taxes added to an already bloated government budget! (I’ve said before that it is a terrible idea to give MORE money to a group—legislature and governor—who can’t adequately manage the money they already have received. It makes no economic sense to reward mismanagement!—my addition) There could not be a worst time to raise taxes! We MUST take action NOW!

Join us on May 19th in Springfield, visit with you’re your local lawmaker and have your voices heard.
