“HR3: House Votes to Defund Abortion in America
May 5, 2011 by Nathanael Yellis

Yesterday, the House overwhelmingly passed HR3, the ‘No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act.’ However, it now must be passed by the Senate and signed by the President before becoming law.

HR3

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d112:h.r.3:

would ensure that no taxpayer funds go to health plans that cover abortion, that no federal health facilities or physicians paid by the federal government provide abortions, and that no federal tax breaks provide underwriting for abortion costs.

The bill, which had 227 cosponsors, proceeded to the House floor under closed rule, limiting amendments. The final vote was 251-175—click here for details on the HR 3 roll call vote. (The vote result is listed below—my addition)

Even though fiscal conservative issues take most of the headlines, the vote signals that social conservative issues still unite the Republican Party. (And they should; they MUST!—my addition) According to analysis in the LA Times:

'Dubbed the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, the bill was approved along party lines and endorsed by longtime abortion foes and the House Republican leadership, despite arguments that GOP lawmakers should keep a narrow focus on budget and spending issues.'"
