Education and the Federal Government

“While most school funding comes from local and state resources, the federal government helps the poorest schools in the lowest income areas. (The federal government pours money into many more schools than just the “poorest schools in the lowest income areas!” I was a school board member for four years and that statement is simply NONSENSE!!! Ask your local school board how much federal money they receive! Also, ask what restrictions are tied to the money!—my addition) We are now beginning a debate in Congress about how this funding can be employed to improve education performance in America. While there is a strong consensus behind making dramatic reforms to No Child Left Behind, there is a growing debate about whether the federal government should encourage the expansion of Charter Schools.

Charter Schools are public schools that offer more flexibility to the principal to hire and fire teachers, set curriculum standards, instructional hours and the number of school days.

Regular public schools must meet the mandates of all federal, state and union rules and restrictions. While many Charter schools dramatically outperform their regular school counterparts, not all perform to expectations.

(Would someone please explain the following to me? IF charter schools, in general, perform better than other government schools because they “offer more flexibility to the principal to hire and fire teachers, set curriculum standards, instructional hours and the number of school days.” And because, “[r]egular public schools must meet the mandates of all federal, state and union rules and restrictions.” Why don’t the powers that be simply remove the restrictions that HINDER appropriate educational practices on ALL government schools.

Isn’t the great cry; the cry for equality? How can all government schools be equal if some government schools operate on one set of rules that are MORE restrictive and other government schools operate on rules that are LESS restrictive? How is that equality? How is that “Playing on the same level field?” Why are restrictive rules better for some government schools and lessening those same rules better for other government schools? Have these government officials, Senator Kirk, no common sense?—my addition)

I strongly support Charter Schools and will tell you more after I have heard from you.”

Here is my answer to Senator Kirk’s question:

Senator Kirk has asked the WRONG question! The real question should be: “Should the federal government be involved in any way with government education at the State and local level?” And, of course, the ONLY Constitutional answer is a resounding NO!!! The federal government has NO Constitutional basis for being involved in education at the State and local level. NOTHING in the Constitution gives the federal government any authority to interfere with, finance, or other wise be involved with education at the State and local level. NOTHING!!! And that, by the way, includes the federal courts!!!
