They Just Don’t Get It!!!

I’m sorry! I had planned to begin answering the question on immigration asked recently with this post. However, that is not going to happen. Because of events this weekend and an article in the Monday paper, I’m going to write at least two posts based upon the phrase “They just don’t get it.” I hope I will begin answering the question later this week. I apologize for the change in plans!

How many unborn toddlers were murdered today because of the humanistic, paganish decisions of the United States Supreme Court?

“Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.” James 4: 17 (NIV)

Our evangelist recently began teaching a 13 lesson series on “A History of the Old Testament” in one of our Bible classes. Just before he was to finish, he accepted an evangelist position at another church outside of Illinois. He finished all 13 lessons but could not begin the next 13 lessons on “An overview of the New Testament.” I was asked by the elders to teach those lessons and I agreed to take his teaching assignment.

Sunday, our lesson was an overview of the book of Mark. The theme of Mark that I taught was based upon the idea that “They just don’t get it!”—they being the people of Israel. What they didn’t understand was that JESUS was the SON of GOD, THE MESSIAH, THE CHRIST, and that HIS kingdom was a spiritual kingdom not a physical, earthly kingdom as was David’s. Because they just didn’t get it, they, with help from the Romans, crucified the only SAVIOR of the world. Yet, GOD was not defeated. GOD can not be defeated. JESUS was resurrected and did establish HIS kingdom—the church.

Soon after, the Jewish temple was destroyed and the Jewish people scattered throughout the other nations. They just didn’t get it and paid an earthly price for their refusal to perceive and understand the TRUTH.

Today, the church has the command, the duty, the obligation, the responsibility, the privilege of teaching and spreading the WORD of GOD. And yet, in the United States there are still a tremendous number of people who just don’t get it! In Mark 4: 11b-12 (NIV) JESUS declares, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables so that, ‘‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’’”

JESUS was quoting Isaiah 6: 9-10. Isaiah 6: 8-13 (NIV) says, “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’ He said, ‘Go and tell this people: ‘‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.’ Then I said, ‘For how long, O Lord?’ And he answered: ‘Until the cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until the houses are left deserted and the fields ruined and ravaged, until the Lord has sent everyone far away and the land is utterly forsaken. And though a tenth remains in the land, it will again be laid waste. But as the terebinth and oak leave stumps when they are cut down, so the holly seed will be the stump in the land.’” The result is that people can see but not perceive; hear but never understand. They just don’t get it.

Today how many people seem to understand that “‘Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.’ In case you missed it, that's some of the wisdom of Solomon found in Proverbs 14: 34. Furthermore, those are the words of God—not a god, but God. That one verse contains the outline of all that I'm going to say today: (1) Righteousness exalts a nation, (2) Sin is a reproach to any people, and 3) A call to national repentance.”
(“In Search of the Lord’s Way,” July 1, 2007 as posted on my last post.)

As stated in the last post how many people just don’t get it??? How many people don’t seem to perceive or understand that: “Having departed from—even denied those religious roots in the lifetime of some of us here today, America now finds itself in the situation of the latter part of that verse: ‘Sin is a reproach to any people.’ I won't go into a recital of a long list of evils which impale themselves upon us, but I’m constrained by conscience to say some things about that.

First, in order of importance because it's the very root of other evils, is the attack now being conducted in our once glorious nation against God. The successful and absolute and total dismissal of God from the education of American children is a reproach upon us as a people. The removal of the words ‘under God’ from the pledge of allegiance to our flag and our country is a reproach on us as Americans. It renounces our heritage as a nation founded on faith in God. The determined and largely successful removal of God from public discourse, all of these and more are designed to make our nation a Godless one—a reproach to the American people.

Next, if it isn't reversed, the Roe v Wade law (a court-made law) will ultimately be the undoing of our proud and powerful country. President of the United States, Ronald Reagan wrote in his book titled, Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation, that, ‘We cannot diminish the value of one category of human life—the unborn—without diminishing the value of all human life.’ (page 18). My friend, abortion is a question of the value of human life. In the absence of God, the life of a human—your life—or mine is of no more value than that of a cockroach or a mouse. Killing nearly a million little innocent, helpless, unborn babies every year (some 40 million since Roe v Wade) is a reproach upon the American people. It's a reality, my friend, that it's impossible to license the killing of one segment of human life and protect all others.

God established marriage between a man and a woman for the purpose of the birth and rearing of children (Gen. 1:28; 2:24). Current attempts to give public approval to gay and lesbian marriages are a reproach to the people of America.

Well, we could go on and on—we could talk about the evil of gambling that has now replaced baseball as the national pastime, of sexual promiscuity, of the drug culture, and more, but you get the idea: ‘Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.’” (“In Search of the Lord’s Way,” July 1, 2007 as posted on my last post.) And yet, so many people just don’t get it. Although they see, they are spiritually blind. Although they hear, they are spiritually deaf.

Some who claim to be Christian even argue that there are two GODS of the Bible. The revengeful GOD of the Old Testament and the loving GOD of the New Testament. They lie!!! There is but one GOD of the universe!!! As Paul said speaking of JESUS: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” [Hebrews 13: 8 (NIV)] If JESUS is the same, then GOD is the same because THEY and the HOLY SPIRIT are all part of the same trinity—three in one just as we have a body, a soul, and a spirit. Those who claim otherwise just don’t get it. They want it to be their way not GOD’S way. It doesn’t work that way. They just don’t get it!!!

They just don’t get it!!! They just don’t get what sin is. They just don’t get how damaging sin is. They just don’t get that they can’t do what they think is right. They just don’t get that they are condemning themselves. Just like the people of Israel, they think they are doing good by crucifying the SON of GOD. They preach the philosophy you are okay; I am okay. We will all go to Heaven even if we are continually disobedient to GOD’S will. They are wrong!!! They just don’t get it!!!

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” Galatians 6: 7-8 (NIV)
