I received the following as an e-mail some time ago and post it tonight as a public service. I do not know the original source and have not checked out the authenticity of the information although two website sources are given.
“If you buy Gift Cards from a display rack that has various store cards you may become a victim of theft. Crooks are now jotting down the card numbers in the store and then wait a few days and call to see how much of a balance THEY have on the card. Once they find the card is ‘activated,’ they go online and start shopping. You may want to purchase your card from a customer service person, where they do not have the Gift Cards viewable to the public.
(I tried to purchase a gift card from a customer service person at a store after receiving this and she said that all the gift cards available were on the display racks. Some companies sell their gift cards on-line and will then mail them to the person you want it sent to. I did this the last time I bought gift cards. It worked well although one recipient wasn’t sure why she was receiving a gift card in the mail—my addition.)
