Then, I plan to answer the response about Iraq. I am sorry for the change in plans. Plans, in reality, often are altered for one reason or another. “The best laid plans … often go astray.” Thank you for your understanding and patience.
How many unborn toddlers were murdered today because of the humanistic, paganish, barbaric decisions of the United States Supreme Court?

I tried to post Monday night after the 10 PM news and had server problems. I tried again Tuesday morning and again had server problems. Hopefully, I’ll post this time.
The Village Board voted Monday night, the 18th to approve the sale of beer and wine by a 4-2 vote. Not surprisingly, the three Trustees who are MOST isolated from the voters because they have over two years left on their four year terms all voted in favor of the proposed amendments. Those three are
1) Darrell Vierling
2) Tony Huette
3) Stephen Newhouse
Also voting in favor of the proposed amendments was Betsy Yarcho whose term is up in April of next year. Voting in opposition to the amendments were Trustees Ginger Hermann and Jeff Kaufman both of whose terms also expire in April of next year.
My sense of the voting (and I obviously don’t know for certain—it is based on my knowledge of the political process and my experience as a school board member) is that the four supporters for the amendments had already determined their votes and nothing said at the meetings was likely to change their mind. Consequently, since I already had given each Trustee thirteen pages of information and since I had little probability of changing a vote, I did not speak at the meeting.
Interestingly (and this was NOT covered by the two TV news stations that I watched during the 10 PM news), before the vote on the amendments, there was a proposal to put the amendments on the November ballot as an advisory referendum. That proposal received a three to three vote with Trustee Betsy Yarcho voting for putting the amendment on the ballot. I think she would rather have had the people decide than her since she is up for reelection in April. The mayor voted to break the tie and NOT have the amendments placed on the ballot. The mayor’s term also expires in April.
This does NOT have to end here. Defeating Trustee Yarcho and/or Mayor Durflinger at the polls in April and another defeat of one of the three additional supporters two years from now with individuals who are opposed to the amendments can change the outcome. However, if it is not done during the next two elections, it probably will not happen. It would be best to defeat both Trustee Yarcho and Mayor Durflinger at the next election and return to the previous ordinance sooner rather than later.
It is difficult to defeat an incumbent but it is NOT impossible. If I were the decision maker for the two grocery stores, as a sound business decision, I think I would wait until after the April election before making plans to add alcohol. I don’t think a third grocery store will be added to the Village before April. The game could be afoot!

The larger question is do the people of Morton really care if beer and wine can be sold at the local grocery store?
