The National Conventions for both parties are completed and the Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates have been selected. Today, a very brief history of the four candidates. The material for Senator John McCain and Senator Joseph Biden is taken from Microsoft ® Encarta ® 2007 [DVD]. Redmond, Wa: Microsoft, Corporation, 2006.
Encarta had only two tables in relation to Barack Obama. One table listed him as one of 5 African Americans who have historically been elected to the United States Senate. The other had him listed as a Senator from Illinois along with Dick Durbin as well as listing the House of Representative members from Illinois. Encarta had nothing on Sarah Palin.
The information for Barack Obama and Sarah Palin is from the Peoria Journal Star August 30, 2008 pages A1 and A7 and my knowledge of Barack Obama.
Senator John McCain is 72-years-old, has a bachelor’s degree from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, which was earned in 1958 and was in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1981. Both his father and his grandfather were admirals in the United States Navy and he was a navy pilot during the Viet Nam Conflict. He was shot down during the conflict and was a prisoner of war in North Viet Nam for over five years.
In 1981, after completing his navy career, Senator John McCain moved to Arizona and was elected in 1982 to the United States House of Representatives serving for four years in that body. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1986 from Arizona and has served as an Arizona Senator since that time—22 years in the United State Senate up to this time.
In the 2000 election, he sought the Republican Party nomination for President won by President George W. Bush. Of course, he is now the Republican Presidential nominee for President of the United States. From elected offices served, he has no executive office experience but has a combined 26 years of legislative experience in both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate.
Senator Barack Obama is 47-years-old. He is a Harvard educated attorney. His father was not an American citizen although his mother was—both are now dead. He was born in Hawaii, spent time in Indonesia as a child, and established his home in Chicago after his graduation from Harvard. As far as I can tell, he has never served in the military.
He served in the Illinois legislature for eight years before running for the United States Senate in 2004. He was elected to the United States Senate in 2004 and has served as a United States Senator since that time—four years.
In the 2008 Presidential primaries he defeated the presumptive Democratic frontrunner—Senator Hillary Clinton of New York—in a closely contested race. Of course, he is now the Democratic Presidential nominee for President of the United States. From elected offices served, he has no executive office experience but has a combined 12 years of legislative experience in both the Illinois legislature and the United States Senate.
Senator Joseph Biden, the Democratic Party’s Vice Presidential candidate, is 65-years-old and received a law degree from Syracuse University in 1968. As far as I can tell, he has never served in the military.
He was elected to the New Castle County Council in his twenties. However, Encarta did not say how long he served in that capacity. It must not have been very long since in 1972 he was elected to the United States Senate from Delaware when only 29-years-old. He has been a United States Senator since that 1972 election serving now for 36 years.
In both 1988 and 2008, he unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for President. He was selected by Senator Barack Obama to be his Democratic Vice Presidential running mate. From elected offices served, he has no executive office experience but has a combined 36 plus years of legislative experience in both the New Castle County Council (for which I don’t know the number of years served) and the United States Senate.
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is 44-years-old. I could not find any statement dealing with her education. I gather, however, that she is not a Harvard educated attorney. As far as I can tell, she has never served in the military.
She was the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska for two terms. (Note: a mayor’s term is usually four years but sometimes is only two years. Therefore she should have at least four years of executive experience and probably as many as eight years as mayor.) Se was elected Governor of Alaska in 2006 defeating an incumbent governor in the primary who had served in the United States Senate for 22 years before becoming governor in 2002. From elected offices served, she has at least 6 years of executive office experience and probably 8 years experience but has no years of legislative experience as far as I can tell.
