Senator Durbin’s new amnesty plan?

The following is a letter to the editor published in the Peoria Journal Star on September 25, 2007, page A4. If true, I believe it will have serious negative consequences for our nation. I have not checked out the information to confirm the correctness of the letter. I am printing it because unfortunately it may well be true. It is the type of action I have come to expect from Senator Durbin. After all, he compared the actions of a few U.S. military personnel to the horrors associated with the Nazi regime of Adolph Hitler.

“Durbin’s dream is our nightmare

To our illustrious, liberal Sen. Richard Durbin, what part of ‘No, the American people do not want amnesty for the illegal aliens in this country’ does he not understand?

Durbin is sponsoring the DREAM (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) Act to attach to a Department of Defense (attachment of a controversial bill to another bill that is likely to pass is a standard procedure used by Congressmen to “sneak” an unpopular bill through Congress—my addition) authorization bill. This amendment will give millions of illegals who entered the U.S. before the age of 16 amnesty, with language so vague any illegal can claim that status. And, it will snowball once they become legalized to grandfather in family members to this country. It also will give the illegals in-state tuition benefits that legal citizens won’t get.

I urge people to flood his and Sen. Obama’s offices with protests against this amnesty farce. We were lied to by Senator Kennedy when they voted for amnesty in 1986. He pledged to secure our borders and suggested we’d never get another amnesty bill like this.

Are these politicians who are so rabid about amnesty being bought off by the corporations who want cheap domestic labor? What has happened to government of, by and for the people?

>>>>>> >>>>>>
Washington”

I would suggest that corporations are not the usual support base for libertine Democrats like Senators Durbin and Obama. It is more likely that it is another libertine Democratic Party attempt to “buy” the votes of and the continued political support of those subgroups, including illegal immigrants themselves, who favor amnesty for illegal immigrants. I certainly don’t believe that granting any form of amnesty for illegal immigrants will be beneficial in the long term for the United States as I’ve argued in numerous previous posts.

The following two letters to the editor were printed on the same day, side by side in the Peoria Journal Star on September 20, 2007, page A4. As a reminder, the editorial staff writes the headline, not the letter writer.

Letter number one:

“How many must die in this war?

Am I alone in being uneasy about the weeks ahead for our country? We will be bombarded by the Bush administration and the generals in Iraq and told how we must protect the Iraqi people by keeping our troops there.

In all the talk, I want one more statistic out of the president: Has he or any of his generals ever given an estimate of how many young Americans have to die for his vague intentions?

Can we please care about our own?

>>>>> >>>>>>
Washington”

First, the intentions of this administration are not vague! We are fighting Al-Qaida in Iraq so that we hopefully won’t have to fight them in the United States! We must defeat the terrorists in every situation and at every opportunity!

The purpose of any army is to fight wars to protect the nation. They know the risks involved in joining the army and have accepted those risked. I wonder if she would have written a similar letter during the early days of World War II.

I also have this question. Has she ever written a similar letter lamenting the murder of the 45 million (+ −) unborn babies murdered in this nation since the Supreme Court’s obscene Roe v. Wade decision? If not, where is her care and compassion for the tragic murder of those innocent, unborn babies?

Letter Number two:

“Tragic loss of life

Does anyone else think it ironic how our leftist politicians are so upset about how many of our soldiers are dying over in Iraq, yet have no problem with the aborting of innocent life?

When a soldier enlists it is his choice as an adult, knowing the risks. Most count it an honor to volunteer their lives for this country.

But the innocent child is still being formed by God in the mother’s womb. That child has no choice when its (I don’t know if this is the word used by the author or if this is selective editing by newspaper personnel. The correct word, of course, is his life or her life—my addition) life is snuffed out, in most cases, for the convenience of the mother.

These politicians cry how tragic it is that over 3,700 American soldiers have made the ultimate sacrifice. While I agree it is tragic, it is not nearly as tragic or immoral as 5 million innocent babies having had their lives taken from them in the same period of time.

Not only is the stance of these politicians ironic, it is downright pathetic. (I would add that it is also downright immoral and criminal. They will one day be required to answer to GOD and I don’t believe that GOD will be pleased with or accept their immoral answer!!!—my addition)

You may have noticed that I wholeheartedly agree with the second letter while disagreeing with the first. Why do you think the Peoria Journal Star printed both letters on the same day? To demonstrate how balanced they are in their editorial selections? NOT!!!

Flash back into the past to a generation that was attacked during a time of upheaval. PBS aired a segment Monday night (9/24/07) dealing with World War II entitled “When Things Get Tough.” That generation did not retreat or talk about defeat when the war was difficult and thousands of our people were captured and killed. They did not stammer “Woe is us!” They did not talk about a limit of fighting for 12 months for our men and then 12 months of comfort back in the States. They endured and fought on because they knew the stakes were high but the sacrifices were worth the cost.

Today, we have almost a whole political party and a large number of citizens who would rather support and fight for the butchering of innocent unborn babies than to carry on the fight against terrorists whose avowed aim is to destroy us and who readily bomb and murder innocent children and civilians. They criticize every action taken to avoid defeat and instead demand retreat and PROCLAIM defeat already. What a change in leadership from the generation that led the nation in World War II. What a change in attitude by the populace of World War II and the populace of today.

Today, the attitude is the same appeasement thinking that originally helped bring about World War II. “If we let the enemy have what they want, they will leave us alone. Can’t we all just be friends?” The only problem is they want to destroy us. Are you really willing to allow that without a fight? Get your heads out of the sand—appeasement did not work before World War II and it will not work today.

A defeat in Iraq will not be a military defeat but rather a defeat of the will. It is an almost certain guarantee that the enemy will increase its efforts to destroy us. It almost certainly will not be an end to our involvement in the war against terror.

Stop murdering our unborn. Start defending our nation against a band of terrorists who have demanded our destruction. Stop the retreat and defeat mentality.

The headline in the Peoria Journal Star on Sunday September 23, 2007 page C1 reads “President is calling.” The first sentence in the short article asks, “Ever wonder what Thomas Jefferson would think about the Iraq war, or Paris Hilton’s jail time?”

Actually, no! As far as I know, there is no way for us mortals to know that today. Nor am I concerned with what he thinks about either of those two issues, if he has an opinion of either one, since I don’t even know if he is aware of either one.

And of course, there are some who claim that once death occurs there is no Thomas Jefferson. They claim that death ends all existence. They claim that there is nothing after death. If that is true, how can we possibly know what Thomas Jefferson thinks about anything or anyone?

The answer, of course, is that someone is going to tell us what Thomas Jefferson would think about this and other topics. The second sentence of the article reads, “Well, now you can ask him at ‘A Conversation with Thomas Jefferson.’”

What nonsense!

Credit cards as a hypothetical example

I am not saying that this is true. It is a hypothetical example of what is possible. I am using Bank of America as a hypothetical example. It could just as well be any major bank or company that controls a major credit card system.

Let’s pretend that Bank of America charges $30 for any monthly payment that is late.
Let’s also pretend that Bank of America has 10,000,000 active customers who use their card each month. Let’s further pretend that one customer always sends his payment at least eight days before the payment due date. If the payment due date is on a Saturday or a Sunday, the payment is sent eight days before the previous Friday.

Let’s pretend that one month he receives a notice that his monthly payment is late and he is penalized the $30. He has no way of knowing if the payment was actually late or why the payment is designated as being late. It could be because Bank of America was negligent in processing the payment. It could be that the post office was slow sending it. It could be a number of other reasons.

Let’s pretend that, for whatever reason, 1% of those 10,000,000 customers were notified that their payment was late and they were being penalized $30 in that particular month. Let’s pretend further that this is a monthly occurrence where a new 1% of the customer base is charged a $30 penalty each month.

What would be the results of such a late penalty payment for the company? Here is the math:

10,000,000 total active customers.

1% or 100,000 of those 10,000,000 customers are charged a $30 late fee each month.

$3,000,000 additional money is collected in late fees each month.

$36,000,000 additional money is collected over the course of one year for nothing more than a $30 late penalty fee per customer for 1% of the total customers in the system.

With 1% of the customers being charged a late fee in any given month, it would take 8.333 years (or 100 months) for the same individual to be charged with another late fee. Do you think that 8.333 years (or 100 months) later he would remember his previous “mysterious” late fee charge?

As Everett M. Dirksen, a one time Senator from Illinois, has been quoted as saying, “A million here, a million there, it soon adds up to real money!”

I am not saying that this is true. It is a hypothetical example of what is possible. I am using Kroger, in part, as a hypothetical example because it is a large retailer and offers weekly sales of some of its products. According to Encarta, Kroger in 2005 was the 24th largest company in the United States based upon revenue collected.

Companies usually offer sale prices for a couple of reasons. One is to increase the number of people who purchase products from the store or, at least, to keep their current customer base. Sometimes, a product is sold below cost with the hope that the consumer will purchase other products not on sell and thus increase total revenue. Another reason is to encourage consumers to try a product that they would not normally purchase with the hope of changing their purchasing habits.

Let’s pretend that Kroger advertises a product that is normally sold for $3 for a sales price of $2 for one week along with all the other sale prices for that week. Let’s further pretend that because of the sale price reduction of ⅓, an additional 20 people per day purchase the product who otherwise would not.

However, for whatever reason, Kroger does not change the price of the product in the computer. The price under the product in the aisle of the store says “Sale Price $2” but the computer still has the price as $3. Therefore, each time the product is sold the consumer believes he is paying $2 per product purchased but he is actually paying the original price of $3 per product. He is paying $1 more than he thought he was.

Let’s also pretend that the consumer DOES NOT CHECK his sales receipt and therefore never realizes that he is paying the full, regular price of $3 per item. Let’s also pretend that Kroger has 10,000 stores located within the United States and the same occurrence is happening in each of the 10,000 stores each day. Let’s also pretend that this happens every day of the year except with a different product each week.

What would be the results of such a pricing “error” for the company? Here is the math:

$1 more paid for each purchase of the product by unsuspecting customers who trust Kroger, or whatever store, to accurately post prices and to charge the consumer the posted price.

20 additional purchases each day the product is on sale.

Each store would collect an extra, unwarranted $20 a day in sales.

$20 additional money collected by 10,000 stores would result in an additional $200,000 collected each day because of one misrepresented purchase price.

$200,000 additional money collected each day over the course of a 365 day year would result in an additional $73,000,000 collected based upon our hypothetical example for one pricing error of $1 per item.

That’s $73,000,000 more over the course of one year for one pricing error occurring throughout the year.

As Everett M. Dirksen, a one time Senator from Illinois, has been quoted as saying, “A million here, a million there, it soon adds up to real money!”

Loss Date: 08/10/2006

Dear Mr. and Mrs. ~~~~~~:

I have received an itemized breakdown of what you see as the pending expenses from the above referenced claim. This letter is in response to previous correspondence with regard to these issues.

1. Remainder for food expenses $XXX.XX – this is the adjustment made for what would have been considered normal during the restoration process. Farmers does not owe you for all of your food expenses during that time. The policy pays you for ‘additional incurred expenses’. This means that you are still responsible for what normal food expenses would be for your family.

2. Housing as you have it broken down has not been documented. There has not been any documentation submitted that evidences you actually incurred these costs.

3. Southwest Shutter & Kitchen – this amount is an upgrade for your kitchen cabinets. You have been reimbursed for like kind and quality cabinets. The policy owes you what you had, not more expensive cabinets.

4. The torn screens are not due to water damage and would not be considered part of the loss.

Additional documentation to support the cell phone usage and overage of what was normal is needed, as well as any further support for the food, housing, and cabinets.

Please submit the requested documentation to support your claim in order for the additional costs to be considered for payment. Any additional payments that may be made on this claim are subject to management approval.

Sincerely,

Farmers Insurance Company of Arizona

Notice that in the original list twelve different items were listed. This response only specifically addresses five of those twelve items. Also, the original list stated “All receipts were delivered to >>>>> >>>>>> by >>>> >>>>>>>, insurance agent.” This letter does not acknowledge receiving those receipts nor does the letter identify the specific documentation that is needed to satisfy the company’s standard of proof of claim. How can the couple provide documentation if they do not know the specific type of documentation needed by the company other than the provided receipts?

Farmers’ Insurance Company receives the requested list

I have not been able to get onto the internet. Hopefully, I will with this attempt.

I recently volunteered to try to help a couple with an insurance problem they were having with Farmers’ Insurance Group. My last post was the response of the representative of the company to the letter I sent to the company on August 1st. Today, I am posting the itemized list that the couple sent in reply. Originally, I was not going to post the list. However, to understand the company’s response, I think it is helpful to know the basic contents of the list.

Consequently, I will not be continuing my Creationism posts today. I do plan to return to them soon.

Then, I plan to answer the response about Iraq. I am sorry for the change in plans. Plans, in reality, often are altered for one reason or another. “The best laid plans … often go astray.” Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Dear Mr. Vance:
I acknowledge receipt of your letter dated August 01, 2007. I understand your position in this matter and appreciate your effort to resolve the issues that remain in the minds of Mr. And Mrs. ~~~~~~.

Would it be possible for you to provide an itemized list of what is not resolved and the dollar amounts associated with the items? This would greatly aid the resolution process as I know it. Please keep in mind that any additional monies that may be payable to Mr. And Mrs. ~~~~~~, are subject to management approval.

Sincerely,

It is my understanding that the requested itemized list was sent to the company. The copy of the list that was sent to me by the couple was dated August 25, 2007. The total of the disputed money involved was $13,049.09. I understand that the couple received the response from Farmers’ Insurance Group on September 7, 2007. They are not satisfied.

I will next post the response from the company in relation to this matter.

BEWARE of Farmers’ Insurance Group

A married couple that I have known since 1993 has been having a problem with Farmers’ Insurance Group. I offered to help (notice that the original damage occurred on August 10, 2007, almost a year ago) and sent the following letter to the company representative August 1, 2007 hoping to encourage Farmers’ to reach an acceptable agreement with the couple. It did not happen.

Read the letter and the following posts concerning this insurance company. It might save you tons of aggravation. I can tell just by talking with the couple that they are extremely frustrated with Farmers’ and with the entire experience to date. I have experienced that same frustration when a renter of a property I owned unsuccessfully tried to burn down the house. Sometimes (too often) it is a battle royal to get the payment for damages that a insured client is entitled to receive.

Therefore, I am becoming involved and tonight I am posting the original letter I sent to the representative.

Dear Sir:

I have known ~~~ and ~~~~~ ~~~~~~ since 1993. I have found them to be hard working, honest, dependable, and caring. When I found out earlier this year that they were having problems in relation to a claim with your company, I offered to help.

I have been told that when informed of my offer the response was “He’s not a lawyer is he?” No, I am not although I have used lawyers in the past to achieve results. I have found that most often a satisfactory conclusion can be reached without involving lawyers.

I do have years of experience working with companies to help them understand the importance of providing satisfactory service to their customers. I have found that generally businesses do want to have clients who are pleased with the final results. Sometimes unfortunately, a business will be blinded by the immediate bottom line and temporarily forgets the important of a satisfied client. My position is to help that business “see the light.”

If I may: three examples from my past experiences. My mortgage was purchased by another company. The new company raised my escrow payments by an exorbitant amount. When I complained, the company said they could charge any amount they wanted for escrow fees. I contacted my U.S. Senator. Soon after, I received a letter stating my escrow fees were being lowered to the level I desired although they could charge the higher fees if they wanted to. Soon after, Congress passed a law restricting the amount of escrow fees a mortgage company could charge.

I was renting a rental car. The business was located just outside of the city limits. The company wanted to charge me the 2% sales tax that was charged by the city of Tucson but not by the county. I disagree and after some discussion I was not charged the 2% tax. After I returned the vehicle, I informed the State Attorney’s office for Tucson that the company was charging the 2% city tax illegally. Soon after, the company went bankrupt.

I am not a lawyer although I have upon occasion used the courts. Because my degrees are in political science, I prefer to use government agencies and institutions when it becomes necessary to involve other entities. However, I generally try to use basic supply and demand argues to accomplish satisfactory results. The enclosed posting from my personal blog, which allows me to reach the world, is a recent example in relation to a problem an individual had with The Hartford insurance company. This is, of course, the third example.

I would suggest that before September 7, 2007 you and ~~~ and ~~~~~ reach an amicable settlement of this claim that is now almost one year since the original event. If that is not accomplished, I will get involved at a personal level. If and when that happens, I will request that all communication be in writing which should have been done from the beginning and which seems to be part of the difficulties that have resulted. I will also ask for copies of each and every portion of the claim, the amount asked for, and the amount paid out by the company. In each instance where the amount paid out is different from the amount asked for, I will request a detailed explanation for the difference. I think you may find that I will not be as reasonable as ~~~ and ~~~~~ are at the present time.

If I am not satisfied with the information and ~~~ and ~~~~~ are not satisfied, I will use every necessary legal means at my disposal to bring about a reasonable and acceptable conclusion to the problem. If I get involved, this letter and all other efforts will be posted on my blog. I believe in public exposure. One of my goals will be to make the financial losses of your company much greater than they would have been if you had reached an amicable settlement in the first place. I do this type of thing for free so it will not cost ~~~ or ~~~~~ anything. However, your company will, one way or another, pay a price for not reaching an acceptable agreement. At least that will be one of my goals and I tend to be very successful at reaching goals.

I hope that will not be necessary. I hope an agreement that is acceptable to ~~~ and ~~~~~ will be reach within the next month. The choice is your: satisfy a client or not. Thank you for your time in regard to this matter.

Sincerely,

Don L. Vance
