Gambling is evil

I will not be continuing my Creationism posts today. I do plan to return to them soon.

Then, I plan to answer the response about Iraq. I am sorry for the change in plans. Plans, in reality, often are altered for one reason or another. “The best laid plans … often go astray.” Thank you for your understanding and patience.

“Christians Oppose Gambling because It’s Evil
I Timothy 6: 6-12

We feel complimented when we are asked to repeat a program that we have done once before—and we are thrilled to comply with the request for an encore presentation on this program, ‘Why Christians Oppose Gambling.’

Welcome my friend, to our program of Bible study ‘In Search of the Lord’s Way’—to become a Christian and to live the Christian life. Say, we are so encouraged and very encouraged when we hear from you that you are being blessed in some way by what we are saying and doing here. Thanks for joining us in our study today, too.

Evil abounds—I mean it grows and flourishes when good people say and do nothing to resist it. Evil is the absence of good. It is like what happens when you turn off the lights in a room, darkness suddenly fills the place. Therefore, we are encouraged when we see and hear good people who are committed to righteousness, standing against the evil trends in the community, or in the church, or the nation—or well, anywhere else. And that is what is happening in our nation today. As we have declared war on evil forces from without our country, we also need to be taking a stand against the evil that prevails right among us here in the nation. The Bible says, ‘Submit yourselves … to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.’ That is James 4 and 7.

There is a devious evil that is growing very rapidly in our nation these days. It is of great concern to many of our viewers. And some of you have asked for help in defeating it before it becomes a bigger problem. In response we are giving today’s program the title, ‘Christians Oppose Gambling Because It’s Evil.’

If you think you would like a printed copy or an audio cassette tape of the message, you may have it free by sending your request to In Search of the Lord’s Way, P.O. Box 371, Edmond, OK 73083. Or you may use our toll free telephone number—1-800-321-8633. Our e-mail address is searchtv@searchtv.org. Ken Helterbrand is going to lead us (in singing—my addition), and then we will be back for that encore presentation of the subject to be discussed today.

We are reading today from the apostle Paul’s first letter to Timothy, beginning in chapter 6, verse 6 and we will read through verse 12 (NIV). ‘But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.’ Now let us go to God in prayer. Merciful God and loving Father, we are so thankful to Thee for the encouragement that we have to set our affection on things higher than the material possessions of this world. Bless us in our study today that we may seek Thou way and Thou truth for our lives. In the name of Jesus we ask. Amen.

As much as is being said about it, still evil cannot be clearly identified or defined apart from the Word of God. Without the Bible there is no acceptable standard for right and wrong, and what is evil in the estimate of some people is defined as good by others. Even with such clear teaching as we have in the book of Romans for example, chapter 1, verses 24 through 27 and in I Timothy chapter 1, verses 3 to 11 some people are still unable to define sodomy as evil. Consequently, we are hearing that old bromide of the devil: ‘No one can say for certain that anything is good or bad.’ Then too, evil frequently comes robed in the good that it can do, and so we are prone to ask, ‘Shall we do evil that good may come as in Romans 3 and 8? Or, perhaps you have heard it said, maybe you have said it yourself even; ‘The end justifies the means.’ We must also remember that the devil is the great deceiver, and he very often confuses our thinking so that we are heard to call evil good and good evil. God’s chosen people in the Old Testament days had fallen into that sort of thing and God pronounced a woe on them. And you may read it in Isaiah chapter 5, verse 20. (And they were the recipients and the repository of the Law.) Then too, when government gives sanction to an evil, that evil just then becomes good and right in the minds of most people. For example: in 1973 when the Supreme Court decided in Roe verse Wade that the Constitution of the United States gave a woman the right to kill her little innocent, helpless preborn baby, what had been evil since the founding of our nation, suddenly became right. And what is declared to be good becomes evil in the eyes of government and some people, if done 15 to 30 seconds after the birth of the child.

When we are reminded daily that America is at war with evil, the evil forces all around the world, we are forced to remember, too, that it is impossible to win over evil from without our nation and our community, while we harbor and protect it within our society. It is extremely difficult for a people to define and win over evil abroad, while they deny and wink at its presence in their own way of living. The Bible says, ‘Righteousness exalts a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.’ (Proverbs 14: 34).

The evils to which we give ‘the government stamp of approval’ by legalization become good and right behavior in the eyes of most people. Such approval voids all our prayers to God to bless America. The Bible says, ‘He who would love life and see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the Lord is against them that do evil’ (I Peter 3, verses 10 through 12). Later in the same book (I Peter chapter 4, verses 15 and 16) we read” ‘Let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.’ And, David, the man after God’s own heart, said, ‘If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.’

Also, there are those who believe the old adage that ‘The voice of the people is the voice of God.’ Therefore, when the majority of the people give sanction to an evil by a majority vote at the poll, the evil on which they decided is made good. However, the times and occasions that I recall reading about in the Bible when the majority ruled, that resulted in personal or national loss or tragedy. A classic example of that is when Moses had been absent from the camp of Israel for forty days. He had been up on the mountain, you know, receiving the law from God, and when he returned, the people had made for themselves another god, a golden calf, and they were worshiping it. Moses was very angry (and so was God) and Moses asked Aaron, in whom he had the greatest confidence all the experience before, ‘What did this people do to you that you have brought so great a sin upon them? So Aaron said, do not let the anger of my lord become hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil. For they said to me, ‘Make us gods that shall go before us, as for this Moses, the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’’ (Read the story for yourself in Exodus, chapter 32).

Oh well, if you are familiar with the Bible you know there are other incidents in the Bible like that. One of the best known such incidents is recorded in Matthew chapter 27. It was the time when Governor Pilate presented an alternative to the people who wanted him to order the crucifixion of Jesus. He proposed that a known murderer and insurrectionist named Barabbas be crucified instead of Jesus. But the people chose to release Barabbas and crucify Jesus. ‘And Pilate pleaded with them and he asked, ‘Why, what evil has He done?’ But they cried out all the more, ‘Let Him be crucified!’’ And it was done. That is what the people wanted. One evil after another because it is what the people want, and over the passing of time, a nation becomes morally corrupt—and falls from decay (from—my addition) within.

My friend, gambling is evil and righteous people not only need to avoid it, but oppose it everywhere and every time it raises its ugly head, even if it means we suffer for it. The Bible says, ‘It is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil’ (I Peter 3: 17). We are taught to ‘Abhor (meaning to loathe or despise) that which is evil’ (Romans 12: 9), and to ‘abstain from the very form of evil’ (I Thessalonians 5: 22). We are admonished ‘Do not be overcome of evil, but overcome evil by good’ (Romans 12: 21. ‘Do not be deceived: evil company corrupts good habits’ (I Corinthians 15: 33). ‘Beware of evil workers’ (Philippians 3 and 2). ‘Evil men and imposters will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them.’ (II Timothy 3: 13 and 14). And perhaps one of the most encouraging and hopeful verses in all the word of God that teaches on evil is II Thessalonians chapter 3, verse 3. And it says, ‘The Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you (or keep you, King James Version) from the evil one.’

So, good people are taught to, not only refrain from gambling, but to ‘loathe’ or despise it. But, where does the Bible mention gambling or say it is sinful? Well, the word itself isn’t a biblical word. It isn’t in the Bible by that name. But, consider with me some biblical teachings which are violated by gambling.

The first appeal of gambling is greed. It is all about money, my friend, not morals. And the Bible says, ‘The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But, you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, and godliness, and faith, and love, and patience, and gentleness’ (I Timothy 6, verses 10 and 11). We read them at the outset of the message. Morals and ethics are of no concern to the gambling industry. Whether it is state sponsored or privately sponsored, gambling can succeed only in proportion to the greed (the love of money) that it can generate among the people. The word is usually in the New Testament ‘covetousness,’ well both in the New Testament and the Old Testament in the King James Versions, but in the New American Standard Version (and others) it is translated ‘greed.’ It actually means an eagerness to have more,—or to have more of what belongs to another person. It is strongly denounced by the Savior in Luke chapter 12, verse 15, where He said, ‘Beware, and be on your guard (that is a double warning) against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.’ Solomon said, ‘They lie in wait for their own blood, they lurk secretly for their own lives. So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain: it takes away the life of its owners’ (Proverbs 1, verses 18-19). In Ephesians 5 and 3 it is mentioned along with fornication and uncleanness as things that are not ‘once to be named among you as become saints.’ Colossians 3 and 5 it is even defined as ‘idolatry’ here. And Jesus said a person cannot serve two gods. In His own words found in Matthew 6: 24, He said, ‘You cannot serve God and mammon.’ And ‘mammon’ comes from a common Aramaic word which means ‘riches.’ So what He is saying is simply this: No person can serve God—and money.

The second appeal of gambling is the hope of getting something without working for it—or a legitimate investment for it. Therefore, gambling encourages a life of indolence and laziness, the end result of which, of course is poverty—then welfare. And that is diametrically opposed to the Lord’s way described in Ephesians 4: 28. ‘Let him that stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need.’

You see, the Lord’s way is not only to cleanse a person from a sinful past and give him eternal life in Jesus Christ. It also includes transforming him into a responsible, respectable, productive member of society, engaged in business or industry—or some form of productive labor by which he is financially able to assist in good works. Gambling makes him a drone or a parasite. Gambling is all about money—not morals.

Gambling was outlawed in early America because it took workers from the field and made them idle and slothful. Communities were forced to support gamblers who were quote: ‘down on their luck.’ It is true even now. Gambling hasn’t changed. It has never been the servant of man to bring prosperity; it has always been the false god that demanded all the gambler has or can borrow and all he can steal.

It is amazing isn’t it: some politicians promise prosperity in exchange for our votes, then they advocate some sort of state sponsored gambling scheme that thrives only on the losses that will bring us to poverty. Think about it, friend: God says, ‘Let no man deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them’ (Ephesians 5: 6 and 7). State sponsored lotteries (or any other kind of gambling scheme, state sponsored or otherwise) depend on the losses of the gambler if they are to succeed. Instead of getting people off welfare, they put people on welfare. Gambling is evil, my friend. And despite all that, it has become our national pastime.

Well next, gambling robs the poor, the down-and-out, who have fanciful, fictitious dreams of winning and living like a millionaire without having to work for it. It is a known, a well published fact, that it is the poor, not the rich, who buy the lottery tickets. (Casinos? Well, that may be a different story; they may attract the elite, the wealthy. I wouldn’t know about that.) But after a program we did on this subject some years ago, a lady wrote me a very sad letter in which she begged me not to say that gambling preyed on the poor exclusively. She and her husband had been unusually wealthy. Then he became a compulsive gambler in Vegas and other glamorous places with people of prominence and prestige. He died a pauper. She remarried and they have done right well.

Gambling is a matter of money. There is no thought or place for morals and ethics; there is absolutely no concern for destroying the person of the gambler. Let us pray. Father, we thank Thee for the teaching that You give us on how to live right. We pray now that we can have the courage to do it and resist wrong. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Of course you know, the word ‘gospel’ means ‘good news.’ And while we think of it as a ‘religious word,’ it really isn’t one at all. It could be used in reference to any good-news-message, but we use it almost exclusively when we are talking about Christianity. That means that the Lord’s way is ‘good news’ in whatever we are talking about. In our honest moments—I mean in the times that we are alone, perhaps tossing on our pillow in the early morning hours, just thinking—most of us would admit that we would like a little better life for ourselves, for our families, at school, on the job or in business or wherever—well, in all our relationships. We would just like to do better. But, how do we do it? That is the question. We need help, don’t we? Here is where the way of Christ becomes good news.

Oh, you have heard me say it week after week, if you have been seeing the program for awhile: The Lord’s way is the best way to live together that has ever been introduced to the family of man. And I believe that! And that is why I am urging you to become a Christian. Just as we have pointed out His better way as an alternative to this growing problem of gambling, His solution to every difficult life situation excels anything that has ever been introduced to us. It is true with gambling, too. Just say ‘no.’ Yes, the Lord’s way to live is the best way we know about anything. But, it is more. His way to cope with what many of us can honestly say was an ugly past, is certainly ‘gospel’ or good news. It was Jesus who said, ‘He who believes and is baptized, will be saved’ (Mark 16: 16). I recommend that to you as being the far better way than simply repeating what some people call a sinner’s prayer , or by answering an alter call, or inviting Jesus to come into your heart. Well, why would I say that? Well, because the Lord said it, and He didn’t say the others. His way of salvation is best. And, the hope that Christ brings to the worst sinner is far, far better or beyond anything anybody else has ever offered you. You see, He offers a resurrection to life, based on His resurrection from the dead. Christ makes the best offer you will ever hear, so why not accept it? Accept it today. Oh, I hope you will.”

Tonight, I’m posting a second letter I’ve just mailed to Farmers Insurance Group because they have chosen not to respond to my letter dated October 17, 2007. The latest letter:

Policy Number:
Loss Date: 08/10/2006

Dear Sir:

On October 17, 2007, I sent a letter to you requesting information in relation to the above unresolved claim. As of today—November 27, 2007—I have not received a response. Since it does not take over a month to gather and send information that should be included in your files of this case, it is obvious to me that your company has decided to stonewall the situation.

One of the things that I’ve learned in my studies of bureaucracy is this paraphrased quote attributed to Franklin D. Roosevelt. “Bureaucracies are extremely difficult to work with. If you ask for information, the bureaucracy ignores the request. If you ask a second time, they will say that they are working on it. If you ask a third time you probably will receive it but officials seldom ask three times.”

Because of this, I make it a policy not to ask three times. I do expect to receive the information with my first request. If I do not, I may ask a second time but, if I do, I intentional up the ante.

I am now upping the ante. If one of two things does not occur by December 17, 2007, I will take a second course of action.

Here are your two options which will preclude my taking a second course of action at this time.

Either: have in Mr. and Mrs. ~~~~~~’s hand by December 17, 2007; a valid check for $13,049.09 to cover their entire claim for the damage that occurred on 08/10/2006. I don’t care if you have to hand deliver the check by the 17th. If the check is even one day late, I will proceed with my second course of action.

Or: provide me with all—and I do mean all—of the information I requested in my October 17th letter. Again, I don’t care if a representative from your company has to hand deliver the information to my P.O. Box. I don’t care if the information is even one day late, I will proceed with my second course of action if I have not received the information by the 17th. Your company has dragged its feet on this claim for far too long!

If neither of the above two possibilities has occurred by the 17th of December, I will proceed with my efforts to secure the claim owed to Mr. and Mrs. ~~~~~~. I will also include in that claim the payment of interest for all money owed back to the original claim date of August 10, 2006. I will also include a payment to Mr. and Mrs. ~~~~~~ for their services rendered for acting in the capacity of a general contractor for your company based upon the going rate for the Tucson area plus interest on that sum.

More importantly, if one of the two options does not occur, I intend to devote my efforts, for as long as it may take, to change the way insurance companies do business in the United States in relation to such claims. Since 2008 is an election year, I will contact and work with any and all Congressmen and women and/or challengers necessary to change the insurance companies’ unjust practices and procedures in this area. It may take a while because sometimes the paths of justice run slow, but eventually it is almost certain that changes will be made.

All I need to do is reference the missteps of insurance companies after Hurricane Katrina and point out how insurance companies are taking advantage of unsuspecting and trusting customers who believe insurance companies will look out for their interest instead of the companies’ bottom line.

Trust me when I say I have done this before and my patience is legion when I set as my goal changing unjust policy.

The choice is yours. Either quickly and fairly conclude this matter after such a long period of time or face the real possibility (nay, probability) of procedures being changed for the benefit of the consumer nationally.

For Mr. and Mrs. ~~~ ~~~~~~,
This letter has been posted on my blog.

The following transcript is from a TV program that I watched on Sunday November 18, 2007. I had hoped to post it Wednesday night the 21st. However, it was not yet available from the web-site. Consequently, I am posting it tonight without comment.

“Let us be thankful

Psalm 100: 3-5

It isn’t news to you by now. If for no other reason than it will be a day off work, you are probably already aware that Thursday of this week is (the) American day of Thanksgiving. And, it’s likely you have plans—as I do—for a big thanksgiving dinner with family—or friends—well, turkey and all the trimmings—and then some ball games perhaps on TV or radio in the afternoon. As you might have expected, our message today is titled: "Let Us Be Thankful." Say, we are glad—and we are thankful too, that you have joined us today.

My friend, in keeping with the spirit of the season, let me assure you we're so thankful that you have joined in our Bible study today ‘In Search of the Lord’s Way.’ It’s our sincerest prayer that we will both be blessed by our study.

Thanksgiving is not a religious ‘holy day’; it's a national holiday. Three years after the Pilgrims arrived, two years after the First Thanksgiving, Governor William Bradford made an official proclamation of a day of Thanksgiving. Let me read you just a part of it. He said, ‘To all ye pilgrims: In as much as the great Father has given us this year an abundant harvest of Indian corn, wheat, peas, beans, squashes, and garden vegetables, and has made the forests to abound with game and the sea with fish and clams, and inasmuch as he has protected us from the ravages of the savages, has spared us from pestilence and disease, has granted us freedom to worship God according to the dictates of our own conscience;—now I, your magistrate, do proclaim that all ye pilgrims, with your wives and ye little ones, do gather at the meeting house, on ye hill, between hours of 9 and 12 in the day time, on Thursday, November the 29th, of the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred twenty-three, the third year since ye Pilgrims landed on ye Pilgrim Rock, there to listen to ye pastor and to render thanksgiving to ye Almighty God for all His blessings.’ And it was signed by ‘William Bradford, Ye Governor of Ye Colony.’

What an expression of faith in the role of the Almighty God in the protection and the preservation of our founding fathers—that our founding fathers had of this great nation! Well, we will have more to say about that in a moment. If you think you might want—or need—a free printed copy, or CD, or audio cassette tape of the message, please mail your request to In Search of the Lord's Way, P.O. Box 371, Edmond, OK 73083. Our e-mail address is searchtv@searchtv.org. And our toll-free telephone number is 1-800-321-8633. After Ken Helterbrand leads us in a hymn, I’ll be back.

We are reading today from the one hundredth Psalm. We will read beginning at verse 3. ‘Know that the Lord, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting, and His truth endures to all generations.’ What a great thought! Let’s go to Him in prayer. Holy Father, we have so much for which to be thankful today, and we are going to meditate upon those things as the program progresses. We pray Your blessings with us and we pray that You will continue to bless our nation as a people. Help us to realize our weaknesses and our transgressions and be penitent in spirit about them. Help us, Lord, as we make an effort to return to being of Your will and acceptance of Your presence with us in our nation and in our personal lives. This is our prayer through Jesus Christ, Amen!

Awhile ago I read what is said to be the first Thanksgiving Day proclamation in American history. One hundred sixty six years later in 1789 our nation's first President, George Washington issued the first ‘Presidential’ Thanksgiving Proclamation of the United States. And I am going to read a part of it now. I won’t read all of it, because some of it isn’t pertinent, but I want you to get these thoughts. ‘Whereas, it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and whereas, both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceable to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness; Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the twenty-sixth day of November next to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being.’

Seventy-four years later, on October 3, 1863, President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln issued another ‘thanksgiving proclamation’ and I am going to read part of his. ‘It is the duty of nations as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God; (he said) to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations are blessed whose God is the Lord...We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God...It has seemed to me fit and proper that God should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November as a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father Who dwelleth in the heavens.’

Well, time didn’t permit me to read all of those proclamations in their entirety. I’ve read as much as is necessary in them to show that: first of all, in spite of all we are hearing nowadays about ‘separation of church and state,’—and secondly, that all that is being done and taught in our country—and thirdly, all the current campaigns to prevent even a public mention of God in the pledge of allegiance, and so on—our forefathers did live unashamedly with a faith in God, Almighty. They believed strongly, friend, in the providence of the Almighty God in the beginning and in the development of our nation. They feared not at all to insist that every citizen take the time and make the effort to thank God and to pray to God for His blessings on our beloved country. Yes, ours is a ‘Christian nation’ as opposed to being a Muslim or Buddhist or Hindu or yes even a secular nation. Yes, our leaders have, until only recently, believed in God and, the Bible to be the true word of God.

While I was preparing this message for today, I was traveling. While I was waiting for a plane, I was reading in the Bible—the book of Judges. And here is what I was reading: ‘So the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord which He had done for Israel....When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel....and they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger....And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods....Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against them, against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia...’ (Oh, you can read the whole story with all the details in the book of Judges, chapters two and three.)

That isn’t a bed-time story for the little children, friend. It’s history. It is inspired history. I mean, God had that written for us Christians today so that we could learn from it (Romans 15 and 4). It really happened to the people of God in the Old Testament times (late in the 12th and early 13th centuries BC.) It is reality, friend. And, the thing about it is: If we don’t learn from it, we’re destined to repeat it. No, no, no now, I don’t believe America is God’s chosen people of the 21st century AD; of course I don’t believe that. But, Christians are! And as surely as Christians are taking pride in their blissful but false security of ‘inclusiveness’ that demands acceptance of all religious faiths with all their gods, just that surely we will provoke the anger of the Lord against us. And we will become enslaved to people who worship—perhaps Allah as their god. Already we, to show how really ‘big-hearted’ and generous and inclusive we are, we, like the children of Israel we read about a few minutes ago in the book Judges, chapters two and three, we are giving those gods preferences—something we consistently and stubbornly refuse to do for the Christians. I am blessed to be one of what has been called ‘The Greatest Generation.’ It isn’t that because of the great contributions I have made to it. Yet, we of the greatest generation must have failed in at least one respect: we must not have taught our children faith in God. I say that because it seems, from us there arose another generation that knew not God. Or, maybe it was the ‘baby-boomer’ generation, the one that followed us that failed in this respect.

Anyway, let’s make this Thanksgiving Day a day of real and sincere thanksgiving to God for His bountiful blessings and His presence felt in American history thus far. Let’s make it more than—just a day off work, more than just roast turkey and dressing and pumpkin pie and all the trimmings. Let’s make it more than a day of viewing ball games on TV. Let us openly, and without apology, give God thanks and praise for His marvelous goodness and for His providential care on our great nation up to this point. And what do you say we begin a movement—offering a daily prayer to Him for an American renewal of faith in Him and His word. And let’s get this nation of ours turned back to Biblical morality. We need a national commitment to Biblical Christianity—enough of—and down with this ‘show business’ style of religion. Let’s get serious about God and about our service to Him. Let us ‘be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.’ Let us ‘Put on the whole armor of God, that [we] may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil—and having done all to stand’ for the faith of Christ Jesus, the Son of God and His way of life as we read about it in Ephesians chapter 6 verses 10 and 11.

Thank God this thanksgiving that we live in America. America has an enviable history of being ‘the land of the free and the home of the brave.’ God has blessed us with freedoms no other people in the world enjoy. American citizenship is, therefore, the envy of the world. I have lived abroad and I know that is so. But, our freedoms are slipping away, friend. Yes they are, one by one. Every time new legislation is needed to control our behavior in this nation, that legislation becomes law, well at that time, either locally or nationally, the people lose a freedom to make the right choice on their own. And government takes more control of the lives of its citizens. This thanksgiving let’s thank God for His exercise of His mighty power in the beginning and in the continuance of our beloved nation.

Let’s learn another lesson from the history of Israel. Knowing he would not be entering ‘the promised land’ with the people, Moses prepared them for their entrance into it and their acceptance of it. Among other things, he said to them: ‘The Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, that flow out of the valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey; a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing; a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills you can dig copper. When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you. Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today, lest when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful houses and dwell in them; and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt from the house of bondage...then you say in your heart, My power and the might of my hand have gained this wealth. And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the power to get wealth.’ Now that is from Deuteronomy chapter 8; and we need to go back and read that again and again. Say friend, we certainly need a ‘caution’ sign here, don’t we? It’s just human nature, I suppose, to take the credit or the honor for our national—or even our personal prosperity and well-being. On second thought, it might not have been because of us at all; it might very well have been in spite of us. It was, in fact, God’s doing.

Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. Let’s not forget to thank God from whom all blessings flow, for all we are and all we have—for life. Paul preached on Mar’s Hill that ‘God gives to all life, breath and all things’ (Acts 17:25). Let’s thank Him for the ‘purpose of our lives.’ ‘None of us came into this world because we chose or when we chose, but because God had need of us’ (2 Timothy 1:6 through 8). Let’s not forget to thank Him for His grace, because of which we can be saved (Ephesians 2:8 and 10). Let’s remember to thank Him, too, for His Son, Jesus Christ, in whom we have salvation, even the forgiveness of sins (Colossians 1:14). Let’s thank Him, too, for the person who taught us the gospel which is God’s power to our salvation (Romans 10:15, 1 and 16). There is also the Holy Spirit, like God and Christ, comes to dwell in us when we come to God for forgiveness (Acts 2:38). And we should be very thankful. Let’s not neglect to thank God for the church, the body of all the redeemed people in the world, in which we have a rich fellowship with all others of like faith (Acts 2:36 and 47). Let’s not forget to thank God and pray for our country. Let’s thank Him for the hope that we have of our eternal life in heaven, as we read about it in John 14:1 to 3. Finally, ‘In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you’ (I Thessalonians 5:18). Let us pray. Thank You, Lord, for this time that we can meditate upon the great blessings that You shower in abundance on us, and for the good life we enjoy. Help us, Lord. Forgive us our unthankfulness and help us to be thankful people. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

It’s a real joy, friend, to have been a guest in your home today. I pray you’ve been as blessed as I have been by this study. I say again, Thanksgiving Day is not a Biblical holy day, but a national holiday. We, as a nation founded on the principles of faith in God and His word, have so much for which to be thankful this week. While our current president hasn’t asked us, nor is it required of citizens like the payment of income tax on April 15th every year and those other things, thanksgiving is a custom established by former presidents and even our national congress for Christian citizens to give thanks and to pray to God on the fourth Thursday of November every year. Well, let us just do it, what do you say? It’s an excellent way to practice New Testament Christianity in our present environment.

If you think you would like or need a copy of today’s message, you may have it free by writing us, In Search of the Lord’s Way, P.O. Box 371, Edmond, OK 73083. Our e-mail address is searchtv@searchtv.org. Or you may prefer just to call us, and we will pay for the call if you use our toll-free telephone number, which is 1-800-321-8633. Yes! You may use these addresses and the phone number to enroll in our Free Bible Correspondence Course, too. We have two of them. The first consists of eight lessons. It’s a very simple and systematic study of just the Bible. The advanced course consists of thirty lessons and is a more advanced Bible study. Be sure to tell us which one you would like. Both of them are free.

You may have noticed: we made no appeals for money on this program. That is because we are sponsored by churches of Christ—and some individual Christians in the area of your station right here. Say, they’d love to have you worship with them. We would like that, too. Will you do that? If you need help locating them, we would like to be that help. We plan to be back next week and we hope that you will be with us at that time, too. Invite a friend to be with us, too. God bless you now. We love you.”

Thanks

I’m taking the next few days off. The LORD willing, I’ll post again Monday night. Have a great weekend.

“The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But THANKS be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” I Corinthians 15: 56-57 (NIV)

“THANKS be to God for his indescribable gift!” II Corinthians 9: 15 (NIV)

“Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather THANKSGIVING.” Ephesians 5: 1-4 (NIV)

“Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving THANKS to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5: 17-20 (NIV)

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with THANKSGIVING, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4: 4-7 (NIV)

“For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving THANKS to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Colossians 1: 9-14 (NIV)

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with THANKFULNESS.” Colossians 2: 6-7 (NIV)

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be THANKFUL. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving THANKS to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3: 15-17 (NIV)

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and THANKFUL.” Colossians 4: 2 (NIV)

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give THANKS in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” I Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

“I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and THANKSGIVING be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” I Timothy 2: 1-4 (NIV)

“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be THANKFUL, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire.’” Hebrews 12: 28-29 (NIV)

“All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying:

‘Amen!
Praise and glory
and wisdom and THANKS and honor
and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever.
Amen!’” Revelation 7: 11-12 (NIV)

(I couldn’t get onto the internet last night and therefore did not post last night. Sorry.)

I have received one response so far from my mailing of a Congressional questionnaire (See the November 14th post for the questionnaire and the November 16th post for the candidates.) for the primary election for selected Congressional Districts and for the U.S. Senate from Illinois. Unfortunately, the candidate did not return the questionnaire. Instead, I received campaign literature consisting of two pages of generalized issue statements. That is not acceptable and I will not publish the two pages. Should he/she send the questionnaire completed and signed, it will, of course, be posted.

I have a degree in political science. I have been taught how to write a valid public opinion poll question unlike much of the junk that masquerades today as a valid question. Most of the questions ask if the primary candidate will or will not take a specific action in relation to a specific issue. The others ask for the position of the candidate in relation to a specific question rather than asking about generalities. The questions also measure the intensity of the support or opposition to the issue by requiring a distinction between agreeing/disagreeing and strongly agreeing/disagreeing. That is a technique to help determine whether or not the candidate is likely to compromise on an issue because he/she does not have a strong devotion to that issue. General campaign literature tends to ignore intensity in relation to many issues.

Not only have I been trained in political science, I have run for political office. Even though I had training, I attended the campaign workshops that both parties tend to hold for their candidates. I did so to learn from people who had practical experience running political campaigns. I still have the material given to candidates at those workshops. In the future, I might do a post or two on some of the techniques taught.

Two quick examples in relation to campaign pictures. Campaign pictures with the family are almost always considered important. At one workshop, we were told of a candidate who was single. Since they could not do a family picture, he was shown jogging with a beautiful, big dog. The fact that he was jogging was important to the picture. The fact that the picture included a dog, it was a beautiful dog, and it was a big dog was also all important to the picture—every aspect of the picture was taken into account.) It was an impressive picture. In fact though, the candidate did not own a dog and the picture was staged.

In another campaign, the candidate was shown playing basketball with his children. The final campaign picture was one of dozens of pictures taken by a professional photographer during a basketball game that was played specifically to get an appropriate picture for the campaign. Several hours were taken to get an “impromptu” picture to use in a campaign mailing.

As Ronald Reagan has been quoted as saying, “I paid for this microphone!” This is my blog and I know the process used in political campaigns. I never wasted my time answering questionnaires from organizations, such as Planned Murderhood, that I knew would not endorse my candidacy.

However, my questionnaire is not for the purpose of my endorsement or helping me decide who to vote for. It is designed to give specific information to the general voting public about specific primary candidates and their positions on specific issues without the normal, generalized information given within campaign literature.

Therefore, unless I receive the questionnaire I sent to each candidate with all questions answered (comments are optional) and signed by the candidate, I will not post anything provided by that candidate. I will, on January 2, 2008 as stated in my letter to the candidates, identify those primary candidate(s) who decided not to answer my questionnaire. I will also post once again before the primary election all the answers from all the candidates (I haven’t decided yet if I will post the comments for a second time.) who have answered the questionnaire and the names of all those who did not answer the questionnaire.

Campaign literature is not sufficient. I will not contact candidates again asking them to answer and to return the questionnaire. They are adults who theoretically want our votes. They should be willing and able to give specific answers to specific questions.

Hollywood: the new Sodom and Gomorrah?

It seems that lately I have been writing about subjects that I had not planned to write about. That is also the case today. The following brief article was in Parade magazine on November 18, 2007, page 18. Since the article is short, I am posting it in its entirety.

“Election Watch: Celebs vote with their checkbooks

She can’t make up her mind about Dr. Derek Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy, but for now, Ellen Pompeo is committed to Barack Obama. The TV star has given $4,600 to him. Others are still waffling, with Paul Newman pledging maximum amounts to Obama, Christopher Dodd and Hillary Clinton. Actors and actresses have given more than $585,000 to Presidential candidates so far with 93% to Democrats and 7% to Republicans. Who’s ahead in the race for donations? Obama and Clinton are first and second among Democrats; Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney occupy those spots in the GOP field. And even though Fred Thompson was one of them—he starred on TV’s Law & Order—he reportedly has received only $350 from actors and actresses.”

I think it is safe to claim that Hollywood, including TV programming, is the greatest single source of propaganda in the history of the world. The propaganda they spew out is replete with immorality—violence, immoral sexual activity, praise of homosexual behavior, greed, all vices of humanity, obscenities, self indulgence, and support for the MURDER of unborn children.

From the above article, it seems that the actors and actresses not only play those roles but they also support such activities since they financially support those political candidates that promote the same activities particularly homosexual behavior and the MURDER of unborn babies. Even when the donations go to Republicans which is only about 7% of the time, the two main Republican beneficiaries seem to be the two most libertine Republicans. (Some might argue that Mitt Romney does not fit that category. I plan a post on Mitt Romney in the future.) It seems that Fred Thompson, although he worked and lived among them, has not been part of them just as Lot in the Old Testament worked and lived among the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah but was not part of them.

So my question is this, why would any Christian or anyone else, who has moral values, support Hollywood and the vast wasteland of TV by watching and spending money to watch such promoted immorality? Why would we indirectly put money into the hands of the very people who then donate that money to libertines who promote and support immorality? Does that make sense to you?

Just as where actors and actresses donate their money demonstrates their moral values; so to does what we watch and spend money on demonstrate our moral values. As JESUS said, “‘No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.’” Matthew 6: 24 (NIV)

The following list of Congressional candidates is from the Illinois State Board of Elections. I have included the political party (D = Democrat and R = Republican) and whether or not there is an incumbent seeking reelection. If there is an incumbent, I have identified him as such. I have listed the Senate first, then the 18th District since I live in that District, and then each of the other Districts—11th, 14th, 15th, 17th, and 19th –in order.

I expect that incumbents will be less likely to answer the questionnaire sent. I also expect that if Green Party candidates want to be recognized as viable candidates, they will be most likely to answer the questions since they should be seeking every opportunity to make their views known. We will soon know who is willing to take this opportunity to present their views to the public on some issues of interest. Consider this, if a candidate is not willing to answer the questionnaire, is he or she worthy of your vote? (The questionnaire sent to the candidates was posted November 14th and is entitled “Congressional Questionnaire.”) Stay tuned.

I have RIGHTS (part 3)

I sent the five Senatorial candidates of the Republican and Democratic Parties the Congressional questionnaire today. I also sent the questionnaire to the four Republican and Democratic candidates for the 18th Congressional District. I still have to do some research for the other Districts. From what I can tell, neither Party lists their primary candidates for the House of Representatives on their state-wide web sites. It doesn’t seem like they want to promote these candidates.

I will not be continuing my Creationism posts today. I do plan to return to them soon.

I didn’t intend to do another post on this but then a short filler article in the newspaper came to my attention. It was, of all places, on the comics page—Peoria Journal Star, November 15, 2007, page C7.

“Random Kinds of Factness Erin Barrett & Jack Mingo

Living or working with smokers gives you a 24% higher risk of developing lung cancer than if you live in a smoke-free environment.

Each year, 160,000 people die from lung cancer, and 174,000 people were newly diagnosed with it. (Each year about one million unborn babies are MURDERED, but who’s counting?—my addition) About 3,000 of them got it from passive smoking—from living or working with smokers.” (About 3,000 a year get lung cancer because of passive smoking! And lung cancer is just one of the diseases associated with smoking. We haven’t had that many deaths each year fighting the war on terror in Iraq with bullets and bombs exploding everywhere!—my addition)

And smokers claim that they have a “right” to smoke wherever they want to. NOT a chance! Nonsmokers have rights too. They have the right not to be polluted and poisoned by the smoke of rude, inconsiderate smokers. In fact, maybe it is time to start suing those smokers who continue to pollute our air without any regard for our rights!

Which brings up something that I have asked before. Is smoking within an enclosed car with minors in the car a form of child abuse? If leaving a child in a warm/hot car to run into a store to buy something is a form of child abuse, is deliberately poisoning a child in an enclosed car also a form of child abuse? Doesn’t that child also have the right to clean, unpolluted air?

Here is the kicker. According to the Peoria Journal Star’s summary of Illinois’ new smoke free law (September 4, 2007, page B5), “The act prohibits smoking in ‘public places, places of employment, and government vehicles.’” So, smokers can not pollute the air in “public places, places of employment, and government vehicles” but they can in private vehicles with children within the vehicle.

Does that mean that government employees within government vehicles have more rights than children within private vehicles? Does that mean that child abuse in private vehicles is permitted by law? Again, if smoking is harmful, why is it permissible to harm children in private vehicles and not permissible to harm government employees in public vehicles? Does that make sense to you?

Yes, we have rights. WE ALSO HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES!!! The rights of an individual do NOT exist in a vacuum!!!

Yes, we have rights. THE RIGHTS OF AN INDIVIDUAL ENDS WHEN THAT RIGHT INTERFERES WITH THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS. The rights of an individual do NOT exist in a vacuum!!!

Yes, we have rights. WE DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO MURDER OUR UNBORN BABIES. WE DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIVE IN HOMOSEXUAL DEBAUCHERY. WE DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO POISON OUR CHILDREN. The rights of an individual do NOT exist in a vacuum!!!

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.” Galatians 6: 7-8 (NIV)

Today, I plan to mail the following questionnaire and letter to each of the Democratic and Republican candidates for the United States Senate race in Illinois. I will then post them in the order I receive them and also before the February primary election. I plan to do the same for select House of Representative Districts in Illinois particularly the 18th Congressional District. (Note: the program did not display the box to be marked for each answer. Sorry!)

P.O. Box 481
Morton, Illinois 61550
http://www.christiangunslinger.blogspot.com/

Dear Congressional candidate:

My name is Don Vance and I have lived in Morton, Illinois since June of 2004. I have been writing a political blog at http://www.christiangunslinger.blogspot.com/ since July of 2005. This year I have decided to send a questionnaire to all candidates running for Congress from Central Illinois—specifically Districts 11, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, and for the Senate seat that is up for election. (Okay, the 14th probably is a stretch but I used to live in Kane County so I thought I would include it. Doesn’t the 17th look Gerrymandered?)

I have included with this letter a short questionnaire which I ask that the Congressional candidate personally complete. Each question provides a short space for a comment. If you desire to expand any or all comments beyond the space provided please feel free to do so. Please answer all questions. (I realize that one question applies specifically only to Senatorial candidates but please answer it anyway.)

This is my plan for publication. The questionnaires will be posted on my blog in the order that I receive them. If I have not received a questionnaire from a candidate by January 2, 2008, I will note on my blog that that candidate(s) decided not to reply to the questionnaire. Before the primary I will summarize the answers of each candidate for each office as a group. The first candidate who responds for each office will have a choice of having their answers posted first or last in relation to the other candidates for that office. Please mark your preference below.

If my questionnaire arrives first, please post the pre-election responses:

>>>>>>> first >>>>>>> last

Thank you for your time and for responding to this questionnaire.

Sincerely,

Don L. Vance

The law

I will not be continuing my Creationism posts today. I do plan to return to them soon.

Then, I plan to answer the response about Iraq. I am sorry for the change in plans. Plans, in reality, often are altered for one reason or another. “The best laid plans … often go astray.” Thank you for your understanding and patience.

I received the following e-mail earlier this week. I’m posting it tonight as it was sent except for some cleaning up of punctuation.

“LAW This is one of the better e-mails I have received in a long time! I hope this makes its way around the USA several times over! So Be It!THE LAW IS THE LAW

So if the U.S. government determines that it is against the law for the words “under God” to be on our money, then, so be it. And if that same government decides that the “Ten Commandments” are not to be used in or on a government installation, then, so be it.

I say, “so be it,” because I would like to be a law abiding U.S. citizen. I say, “so be it,” because I would like to think that smarter people than I are in positions to make good decisions.

I would like to think that those people have the American public’s best interests at heart.
BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I’D LIKE?

Since we can’t pray to God, can’t Trust in God and can not post His Commandments in Government buildings, I don’t believe the Government and its employees should participate in the Easter and Christmas celebrations which honor the God that our government is eliminating from many facets of American life.

I’d like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter. After all, it’s just another day.

I’d like the U.S. Supreme Court to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving & Easter as well as Sundays. After all, it's just another day.

I’d like the Senate and the House of Representatives to not have to worry about getting home for the “Christmas Break.” After all it’s just another day.

I’m thinking that a lot of my tax payer dollars could be saved, if all government offices & services would work on Christmas, Good Friday & Easter. It shouldn’t cost any overtime since those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be “politically correct.”

In fact, I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially set aside for worshiping God) because, after all, our government says that it should be just another day.

What do you all think?
If this idea gets to enough people, maybe our elected officials will stop giving in to the minority opinions and begin, once again, to represent the “majority” of ALL of the American people.

SO BE IT.
Please Dear Lord, Give us the help needed to keep You in our country!
‘Amen’ and ‘Amen’

Touché!

These are definitely things I never thought about, but from now on I will be sure to question those in government who support these changes. At the top it says ‘I hope this makes its way around the USA several times over!’

Let’s see that it does. Keep it in your mailbox and resend it whenever someone new comes along. P.S. In God We Trust & God bless you & yours”

I wasn’t going to comment on this but I decided to. In the examples given, it has not been the U.S. government, as such, who has made the decisions mentioned and probably won’t be the U.S. government in the future—by U.S. government I mean the elected representatives of the people of the nation. It has been an out of control court system which has judges and Justices who believe they know better than our elected representatives what should and what should not be the policies of the nation.

They accomplish what elected representatives would not dare to do because elected representatives realize that voting to remove “under GOD” and similar libertine votes would quite possibly be political suicide although the present Democratic controlled House of Representatives seems to want to do just that. There are constitutionally established controls that can be used to prevent the courts from usurping their authority. Unfortunately, Congress has demonstrated a singular lack of will to rein in the courts. And the libertine Democrats prefer to have the courts destroy our nation instead of doing it themselves.

We need Congressmen who are willing to just say NO to the courts and Senators who demand that judges be appointed to the bench who will follow judicial restraint. If policy is to be made, it should be made by elected representatives of the people not an unelected judiciary. We can stop COURTOCRACY if we have the will!!!
I have RIGHTS! (part 2)

I wasn’t going to continue with this topic tonight. Then, a long time acquaintance stopped by unexpectantly Monday afternoon. He is an elected government official who has been elected as a Republican although he readily admitted to me that he ran as a Republican because he would not get elected as a Democrat. (Isn’t that shocking? I know people who are libertine Democrats.) I imagine he holds his libertine Democratic beliefs in check to some extent.

Anyway, for a reason I don’t recall, we started talking about the twelve year old girl and her colored hair extensions. (See previous post.) Not surprisingly, he thought it was great that she won out and thought it was her right to wear the colored hair extensions. He said that the school district capitulated because the district board knew they would lose the case in court.
Maybe so. I don’t like to speculate on how a court will decide a case. But in reality, that is a major part of the problem. Why would a court get involved in a question of whether or not a twelve year old girl can or can not wear hair extensions in school? Who gave the courts such power to nitpick over such an insignificant and totally trivial issue? If someone doesn’t agree with a teacher using yellow chalk because they think it is a negative reference to Asian people should they be allowed to sue to stop a school from using yellow chalk?

This has been one of the major problems in this nation over the last forty plus years! The courts have decided that they should be the final arbitrator over ever mundane issue that could possibly be dealt with by government. THAT WAS NEVER THE INTENT WHEN THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION ESTABLISHED THE COURTS!!! NEVER!!!!!!!

When I was a school board member (We had five members on the board.), my position was that if anyone threatened to or attempted to sue the school district over established school board policy, the board should fight that suit in court as long and as hard as possible even if I originally voted against that particular policy. Why? Because the members of the school board were the people elected by the people to make policy for the people of the school district. The school board was to make the policies for the district—NOT the ACLU!!! NOT the NAACP!!! NOT the members of the COURT!!!!! The COURT HAS NO BUSINESS MAKING POLICY FOR THE DISTRICT.

Do you really think that when the United States Constitution was written, that the writers of the Constitution intended for the courts to decide if a twelve year old girl could or could not wear colored hair extensions to school? Do you really believe that whether or not a twelve year old girl can or can not wear colored hair extensions to school is a “right” guaranteed by the United States Constitution?

Who made the court system the final arbitrator of every single mundane issue that faces a duly elected governmental body? The answer is this: the courts did. And the courts did this incrementally over time and the American people have allowed it to happen. So that today, a small school district, who elected democratically the members of that school board to make policy for the district, has to be concerned with whether or not the United States Supreme Court, which has NEVER had an elected member on the court, believes that having colored hair extensions is a “right” guaranteed by the United States Constitution.

If it wasn’t so serious, it would be absurd comedy. In many ways, we have rejected our indirect democracy for a COURTOCRACY.

We desperately need to restrict the power of the courts so that they return to their original duties of providing the judicial power of government instead of making mundane policy at all levels of the system. We need judges who are not enticed by the power that has been created by years of judicial activism. We need judges who believe in and will follow judicial restraint.
Unless of course, you like judges deciding whether or not twelve year old girls can or can not wear colored hair extensions in school. Unless of course, you like judges deciding whether or not teachers can or can not use yellow chalk in the classroom. Unless of course, you like judges deciding whether or not prayer can or can not be said in a school setting. Unless of course, you like judges deciding whether or not homosexuals must be allowed to get married to each other. Unless of course, you like judges deciding whether or not a mother has the “right” to MURDER her unborn child. Unless of course, you like judges making policy instead of elected officials. Unless of course, you like a Courtocracy.

However, if you want a Courtocracy, establish it by the legal process—write a new Constitution. Do you prefer nine unelected people to make policy in this nation or do you prefer your elected representatives to make policy. A dictatorship of judges is still a dictatorship. If you want a dictatorship of judges, legally rewrite the Constitution.

I wasn’t going to write about this tonight but then the whole post just came flowing to me soon after I woke up one morning. In many ways, this lack of understanding or acceptance and elevation of self above all else has been and is one of the major problems within our nation over the last forty plus years.

Two seemingly unrelated articles were in the local newspaper recently. Both of the issues were discussed by Phil Luciano—one of the Peoria Journal Star’s “special interest hit men” journalists. One issue was covered only in his column; the other made front page news. Phil Luciano seemed to be on different sides of each issue although, in fact, they are related by the same concept.

In one, a woman was sitting on an airplane next to a man who was reading Playboy magazine—a magazine that Phil Luciano identified as pornographic. (Perhaps Senator Obama didn’t realize that when he was hobnobbing with the CEO of Playboy back in 2004. Perhaps he didn’t care.—see my post entitled “Barack Obama, part 11” posted earlier this month) In the other, a 12 year old junior high school student was disciplined, until the school district succumbed to pressure, for wearing hair extensions which were not a color allowed by the school district. This issue made the front page—not once, not twice, but, at least, three times—and representatives from both the ACLU and the NAACP threatened a lawsuit to protect the “rights” of this poor, deprived, discriminated against young girl.

Personally, I could care less if this “mistreated” girl wore hair extensions or not or what color the extensions happened to be. However, both instances demonstrate the perverse demand for our “rights” that permeate this society today.

The U.S. Supreme Court and other groups and individuals, for at least the last 40 plus years, have emphasized personal “rights.” According to the Supreme Court and others, individuals now have the “right”, among others, to MURDER their unborn children, to have open homosexual relationships, to utter any and all obscenities in public, to remove all of one’s clothing as public entertainment, and to remove all references of GOD from the public arena. When States and local governments began to restrict public smoking, immediately the cry went up that the governments were infringing upon the “right” to smoke. Phil Luciano was included in those who trumpeted this cry of alarm.

What is it that Phil Luciano, the ACLU, other such organizations and individuals, and all too often the United State Supreme Court have forgotten, ignored, or just don’t seem to realize? They have forgotten, ignored, or just don’t seem to realize this very basic and important tenet of all democratic societies and of society in general —the rights of an individual ends when that right interferes with the rights of others.

We do not live in an individual vacuum. Our actions have impact on others. We have been created by GOD to be a social being. (A social being; not a social animal since we are not animals.) Smokers may have the right to smoke; they do not have the right to pollute the air of those around them who do not smoke or do not want to be exposed to the pollutants that cigarettes give off. Simply put, our rights are not absolute. Simply put but often ignored, with rights come responsibilities.

The man on the airplane may have the right to read a magazine in public. However, he has the responsibility not to offend others in the process. The 12 year old junior high school girl may have the right to wear any color of hair extensions she wants. However, she has the responsibility to obey and follow the rules of the school district. A smoker may have the right to smoke. However, he has the responsibility not to pollute the public air around him.

There are some Supreme Court created “rights” that will never, in actuality, be rights. No one has the right to MURDER an unborn baby. Neither the United States Supreme Court nor any one else can ever give you or any one else that “right.” It does NOT exist and NEVER will exist. “You shall not murder.” Exodus 20: 13 (NIV) “He (the LORD JESUS the CHRIST—my addition) went on ‘What comes out of a man is what makes him ‘unclean.’ For from within, out of men’s hearts come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, MURDER (My capitalization—my addition), adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these EVILS (My capitalization—my addition) come from within and make a man ‘unclean.’’” Mark 7: 20-23 (NIV)

There are some Supreme Court created “rights” that will never, in actuality, be rights. No one has the right to engage in homosexual behavior. Neither the United States Supreme Court nor anyone else can ever give you or any one else that “right.” It does NOT exist and NEVER will exist. “‘If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads’” Leviticus 20: 13 (NIV)

“Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.” Romans 1: 24-27 (NIV)

“Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” I Corinthians 6: 9-10 (NIV)

“He (the LORD JESUS the CHRIST—my addition) went on ‘What comes out of a man is what makes him ‘unclean.’ For from within, out of men’s hearts come evil thoughts, SEXUAL IMMORALITY (My capitalization—my addition), theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. I received the following as an e-mail earlier this week. I am posting it tonight as a public service. I have not checked the reliability of the information. As a general rule, don’t give any information over the phone to people who you have not directly called and know to be reliable. Don’t trust people who you don’t know and who initiated the phone call to be who they claim to be. I am presenting the e-mail as I received it.

“Northern Water Employees,

Northern Water Management would like us all to be aware that there are a number of SCAMS out there and one if them is highlighted below.

THE SCAM:
The Holiday Season is just a little bit down the road and the bad guys are already trying to get free stuff by using your credit. I just received this so thought I’d forewarn you and forward it on.

This one is pretty slick since they provide YOU with all the information, except the one piece they want.

Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it. This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA & MasterCard Telephone Credit Card Scam works, you’ll be better prepared to protect yourself.

One of our employees was called on Wednesday from “VISA”, and I was called on Thursday from “Master Card”.

The scam works like this: Person calling says, “This is (name), and I’m calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My badge number is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I’m calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank). Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a Marketing company based in Arizona?” When you say “No”, the caller continues with, “Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?”

You say “yes”. The caller continues “I will be starting a Fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1-800 number listed on the back of your card (1-800-VISA) and ask for Security.

You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. “Do you need me to read it again?”

Here’s the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works. The caller then says, “I need to verify you are in possession of your card.” He’ll ask you to “turn your card over and look for some numbers.” There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the security Numbers’ that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he’ll say, “That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?” After you say, “No,” the caller then thanks you and states, “Don't hesitate to call back if you do”, and hangs up.

You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number. But after we were called on Wednesday, we called back within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we glad we did! The REAL VISA security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of $497.99 was charged to our card.
Long story—short—we made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account. VISA is reissuing us a new number. What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card. Don’t give it to them. Instead, tell them you’ll call VISA or MasterCard directly for verification of their conversation. The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card! If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you’re receiving a credit. However, by the time you get your statement you’ll see charges for purchases you didn’t make, and by then it’s almost too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report.

(Repeating the key concept of this e-mail: What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card. Don’t give it to them.—my addition)

What makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I got a call from a “Jason Richardson of MasterCard” with a word-for-word repeat of the VISA scam. This time I didn’t let him finish. I hung up! We filed a police report, as instructed by VISA. The police said they are taking several of these reports daily! They also urged us to tell everybody we know that this scam is happening.

New Credit Card Scam Snopes.com says this is true.”
